VYPE-Georgia-BoxCedartown safety Caleb Ely has shown remarkable signs of recovering from a head injury that required brain surgery last week.

The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports Ely was injured and collapsed on the sideline during Friday’s game against Gilmer. He later underwent surgery to reduce swelling in his brain.

“He’s progressing unbelievably well,” Cedartown coach Scott Hendrix said Tuesday. “Without any setbacks, he’ll be moved out of ICU today and hopefully back home by the middle of next week.”

Hendrix said he and his staff have been unable to pinpoint the play during which Ely sustained the injury while reviewing game video.

The Ely family has created a Facebook page to post updates on Caleb’s recovery.

“His family has been overwhelmed and is extremely grateful for the support they’ve received from everywhere,” said Hendrix. “They would like people to know how much they appreciate it.”
