Second Baptist School, Toon carrying banner for HTown private school ball
While the big public schools get all the headlines, the Houston private school landscape is filled with storylines.
The Second Baptist School and QB Canon Toon is the storyline entering Week 5.
Toon threw a fourth-down, game-winning score against St. John’s 30-28 to elevate the Eagles to the VYPE's No. 1 ranking in all classifications of private schools in the Space City.
The 4-0 Eagles have travelled to Chicago (Wheaton Academy) and Dallas (Episcopal School of Dallas) and good news travels… Second Baptist School is for real. The 6-foot-4 Toon’s bobbing and weaving have gone viral and his big-game heroics have already become legend around Woodway Drive.
He has thrown for over 700 yards and 10 TDS (1 INT) and has run for 370 yards in athletic fashion.
So, who is next? The Eagles face a tough 3-1 Kinkaid Falcons team led by sophomore move-in Wayne Shanks Jr., who is averaging over 100 yards on the ground.
SBS have some familiar names who are also making big plays for the Eagles. Max Bagwell (son of legendary Astro Jeff Bagwell) plays in the secondary along with Ethan Dishman (son of legendary Houston Oiler Chris Dishman). The OL is led by UH-commit RJ Lee and Isaiah Broughton (SMU, Texas Tech offers), who is the brother of Texas Longhorn DL Vernon Broughton.
It doesn’t get easier for Second Baptist after neighboring Kinkaid, as undefeated and district-mate Lutheran South is on the slate in two weeks.

DANCING WITH THE ‘SADERS
Danny Amendola is doing work on Dancing with the Stars, but it’s dad Willie Amendola, who has Concordia Lutheran 3-0 going into district play with TMI-Episcopal (3-0) this weekend.
Amendola led Dekaney High School to a State Title in the biggest classification of UIL football in 2011 and has the Crusaders believing. The straw who stirs the drink is QB Tanner Huckfelt. The 6-foot senior has a ton of experience, has a big arm and a football IQ which is college level.
The ‘Saders are legit contenders for a TAPPS DI District 2 title.

MEEKINS’ MASTERPLAN
No one is talking about Lutheran South Academy (4-0).
Bad idea.
Coach Corby Meekins is one of the most decorated public school coaches after building the Westfield Mustangs into a superpower. He then went into college coaching at the University of Houston, then the University of Texas and back to UH.
Now at LSA, the Pioneers are charting new territory. The offense is led by their big three – QB John LeBlanc, RB Scott Farine and WR Braeden Robinson – which is averaging over 370 yards per game.
The Pioneers are dangerous and travel to River Oaks to play a tough SPC St. John’s Mavs this week.
