THE STATUS: VYPE SATX Hoops Rankings amid second round of district; Jay, Johnson making strides

For the vast majority of teams across the state, district races are nearing their end, and it's becoming clearer who will continue their season into February.
The San Antonio area is no different, though some notable changes have occurred since we last examined the city's top teams.
Brennan (24-2; 11-0 in district) remains the team to beat. As the top-ranked team in the state (TABC), the Bears look more than capable of climbing the brackets over the next month.
Although Steele (26-4) has dropped their last two district games (to East Central and Judson), it’s hard to move them down in the rankings given their strong overall performance throughout the season. The Knights will look to rebound in their final three games and remain in an optimal position to claim the 29-6A title.
Wagner, winners of six straight, has locked up the District 26-5A championship with an 11-1 record against their rivals.
The Jay Mustangs continue to build momentum, now at 27-2 and perfect (12-0) in 28-5A, moving up a spot on our list.
Similarly, SA Johnson (22-8; 9-0) is in a commanding position for the upcoming 27-6A title.
Reagan (19-8) and Harlan (17-10) have had solid performances, while Clark (19-9) and East Central (19-11) make their first appearances on our list in 2025.
With that in mind, check out how the premier squads of San Antonio are stacking up with just a couple remaining in the regular season.

And just like that, we’re already approaching the most pivotal time in the winter season.
With just over a week remaining in the regular season, teams across the state have all but punched their tickets to the playoffs and look to close out their district schedule on a high note.
Just as they were earlier this month, Judson remains top dog, not only in San Antonio, but in all of Texas (TABC), boasting a near perfect record of 31-1 and having all the momentum they could ask for.
Trailing just behind the Rockets in 29-6A are the San Marcos Rattlers (23-6), who have surged in the second half of district play, which jumps them up a couple of spots in our rankings.
Wagner (27-3) continues to be an elite force within Class 5A, as does Pieper (24-6), and after the T-Birds won the second meeting against the Warriors, the District 26-5A title could potentially be shared between the two.
Out of 27-6A, Churchill (25-5) has already clinched a district championship after having gone a perfect 11-0 against their counterparts.
Regarding the 4A classification, Fredericksburg (24-6) makes their debut on our list, and look primed for a lengthy run in the coming weeks.
All that being said, it’s time to examine the heavy hitters out of the San Antonio metroplex who we expect to flourish in the ensuing playoffs.

As the high school basketball season hits its stride, the Wagner Thunderbirds have once again proven their dominance, living up to the high expectations set before the season even began.
Entering mid-January, Wagner boasts an impressive 23-3 record, highlighted by a dominant 44-23 win over district rival Pieper this past Friday.
Given that the Warriors emerged victorious in their first matchup, by the slim margin of 58-52, this was a definitive win for Coach Annissa Jackson and company, as they’ve now secured a tie (9-1) for 26-5A supremacy.
Beyond their district success, Wagner has shown they can compete with the best, including a dramatic 65-60 overtime win over powerhouse Judson and a 58-53 triumph over Brennan, both of which are considered some of the top programs in the state.
At the helm of this talented squad is senior point guard Leonna "LA" Sneed.
Averaging over 24 points, 6 assists, 6 rebounds, and 5 steals per game, Sneed is the engine that powers the Thunderbirds. After committing to Utah in August 2024, her focus is squarely on leading her team to a state championship this March.
Sneed is far from alone in the quest for a title. Sophomores Nia McBride (14 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals per game) and Elle Williams (6 points, 6 rebounds per game) have been critical contributors.
Senior Jenae Moore (9 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists) has also provided vital support, helping the team to its continued success.
With the district championship within reach, Wagner’s aspirations are clear—another deep playoff run.
The Thunderbirds have made five State Final Four appearances since the 2007-2008 season, including a recent trip in 2023, where they were narrowly defeated by Liberty (62-51) in the state semifinals.
As the season progresses, one question looms large: Does Wagner have the depth and star-power to go all the way this year?
With Sneed leading the charge and a well-rounded supporting cast, they seem poised to make a serious run at the state title once again.
