Over this past weekend (Last weekend of October), Acton Academy had their last preseason games. Despite their high hopes, the Eagles finished 0 and 4 in their games with 3 double digit losses bringing their final preseason record to 0 and 8. However, through this run the Eagles did show promise.
Before being sidelined due to illness, Acton's best player and team captain Ian Watson-Hemphill was able to show his skill and earn a place on the all tournament team. Matteo Papola showed major developments, being able to hit mid range pull-ups more consistently and at a higher rate than ever before. Donovan O'Leary showed an improved IQ and hustle with multiple backdoor cuts and easy points off being in the right place at the right time. And Patrick O'Leary finally showed why he was a captain, making timely buckets and defensive stops in the final few games of preseason.
In addition to the above, new player Will Dishinger has started coming into his own with rapidly improved playmaking and a good outside shot. First year player Jack Charrier showed major defensive potential with multiple great stops and heads up plays. New comer Davis Burk is already proving to be a beast on the boards with a natural interior presence. And freshman Noah Celestino showed flashes of shot creation for himself and teammates.
In total, it was clear that the lack of practice time affected the chemistry on the team with teammates not being on the same page in multiple instances and the coach miscommunicating a sub during a crucial part of a game. But this team loves playing for each other and loves playing for their coach. They give 110% effort from the first whistle to the last, and I am excited to see their development as the season progresses.
