WACO - Alex Edwards could barely speak.
The second-year Fort Bend Christian Academy volleyball coach had just pushed her voice to its limits egging on her team towards an eventual 3-0 sweep of Prince of Peace on Saturday to capture the program's first-ever state title in volleyball.
VYPE caught up with Edwards right after the victory to talk the title, the season and the team.
VYPE: You're a State Champion, how does that feel?
Edwards: "It feels great. My voice doesn't like it much but I really can't believe it. I'm just in awe and I'm just so happy to have done it with this group. I just still can't believe."
VYPE: At what point this season did you think, 'hey if we put it all together, we could win it'?
Edwards: "I think for me it was the win over Second Baptist the second time. They came to our house; they came ready to go and we turned it on and went to the next level. I think that prepared us for this moment. And then we did not have an easy playoff run, we were challenged throughout the whole tournament and with that challenge that sent us to the next level. We had some stars rise in Oyinkansola Ajimotokan, Bayleigh Minor, Layne Bulow and then my returner Bailey Hanner."
VYPE: When is it going to set in that you are a State Champion?
Edwards: "For me, I'm one of those people that will overthink it. I've got to debrief; I've got to talk about it a little bit more and then from there it'll set in. The next thing will be the All-State meeting, so to go in knowing that we won and we're going to be getting some kids in that all-state recognition and be known that'll be huge. The bus ride home will be fun but tomorrow I think I'll take it all in and enjoy it a little bit more."
VYPE: When the final point happened, who was the first person you thought of?
Edwards: "For me it was the seniors. Bailey Hanner has been here all four years and she's had to struggle to get to this point. Her senior leadership has allowed us to do that. With the other three they came in, set the tone, set the expectation and said we're going to win."
