As the packets were passed out at UIL realignment this morning, there was something "unique" that couldn't be overlooked.
Conroe ISD is in a six-team district – The Woodlands, Conroe, College Park, Oak Ridge, Grand Oaks (newly-opened) and Willis (moved up from Class 5A). That makes for the only Class 6A district in the state of Texas with just six teams. Of course it's lucky No. 13-6A.
"The only difficulty (in being in a 6-team district) is when you are the only one," Conroe ISD AD Danny Long said. "It will all eventually come together, but it's just unique. There are so many mathematical possibilities that the UIL has to look at."
Conroe ISD is an anomaly.
With the opening of new Class 6A Grand Oaks, that made CISD a six-school ISD. Caney Creek missed the Class 6A mark by approximately 80 kids.The development down Highway 242 didn't take off like people thought, keeping Caney Creek a 5A.
So, what does that mean?
All other districts in the state of Texas have at least seven teams, meaning that they only need three, possibly four non-district games. Conroe ISD needs five non-conference games to round out their schedule. There are no other teams in the state that need a non-district Week 5 game because everyone else is in district play by then.
On the positive side... Four teams make the playoffs meaning that only two will not be in the postseason.
The Woodlands was at work scheduling games and will play Langham Creek, Lamar, Bridgeland and Katy before district play. They will need a Week 5 game.
College Park will face Cinco Ranch, Bryan, Cy Lakes and Klein, while Oak Ridge plays Clear Creek, Stratford, Pearland and Tomball.
Conroe will play Mayde Creek, Kingwood, Summer Creek, Lamar and Clear Springs
