The Austin area had a successful 2018-2019 athletic and academic year, so it earned its 17th UIL Lone Star Cup since the 1997-1998 school year. Mason earned 76 points to beat second-place Sundown (68 points) and third-place [and fellow area foe] Thorndale (66 points) to claim its second straight 2A trophy. Its football team won the UIL 2A Division I state title and its tennis program produced state titles in boys singles, boys doubles, girls doubles and mixed doubles.
2A wasn't the only classification to have two area schools finish in the top three. In 5A, runner-up Dripping Springs finished with 92 points and third-place Georgetown recorded 76 points. They fell short of Highland Park's 124-point total.
The area also got impressive years from Westlake and Liberty Hill. The Chaparrals scored 104 points in 6A to finish second to Southlake Carroll's 120-point mark, while the Panthers' 92-point year was only topped by Argyle (124 points) and Canyon (110 points) in 4A.
