VYPE U: Seniors Taylor and Buehler lead Mustangs to fast start
The Memorial Mustangs basketball team improved to 2-0 Tuesday night after defeating the Strake Jesuit Crusaders on the road by a score of 63-57.
A fourth quarter run led by seniors Ethan Taylor and Grayson Buehler allowed the Mustangs to pull away and win the game off of fast break points and three-point shots made from the corners of the baselines. Both student sections were roaring the entire game as it remained tight through the first three quarters.
The first half was back and forth between both teams with many defensive stops in the first quarter. The Crusaders were led by juniors Edgar Romero and Oliver King and senior guard Blaine Holbrooke, who consistently made shots from the three-point line the entire night to keep the game close. Strake Jesuit walked into the locker room at halftime winning 24-23.
Memorial went on a mini hot streak in the third quarter as they went on a 12-0 run to put themselves up by nine points. The Crusaders were able to bounce back and regain a small lead over the Mustangs, but it was not enough for them to pull away, as Memorial went on another scoring run midway in the fourth quarter.
Buehler made two three-point shots and Taylor was able to finish off a couple of fast-break layups to allow the Mustangs to go up by 12 points. This gave Memorial a comfortable lead for the rest of the game.
Ethan Taylor and Grayson Buehler have both committed to play college basketball next year at the United States Air Force Academy and Dallas Baptist University, respectively. Both players will play key roles this year in leading the Mustangs in scoring.
Thursday night, Memorial will go on to play La Porte and San Antonio Clark at the McDonalds Invitational Tournament, while Strake Jesuit will face San Antonio Churchill in the NISD/NEISD Tournament.
