16 -- GRAND OAKS GRIZZLIES
Grand Oaks and coach Anthony Stephens return three experienced starters off of a 23-17 team that reached the third round of the postseason. The newest Conroe ISD school will have a legit shot at a district title this season and a historic run in the playoffs.
The Grizzlies’ back-court of Trae Lewis, Mike Rosario and Kevin Waddell are their “big three” and are interchangeable.
“We had a good run last year and the guys are hungry to get back there,” Stephens said. “We want to make a run to San Antonio and make our own footprint in this district.”
Jadyn Murray and Ben Garett will be key factors in their ultimate success.
“They are the bigs, who are the ‘X-factors’ to our season,” Stephens said. “They give us length and the ability to defend the paint. We really need them to play big.”

No. 17 — MEMORIAL MUSTANGS
The Mustangs are not far removed from reaching the Regional Semifinals in 2023. Memorial went 24-13 overall a year ago and brought home the District 17-6A crown for a third-straight season. Last year, the playoff road ended in the Area Round.
Fifteenth-year coach Jyusef Larry has an experienced squad coming back for 2024-25 with four starters back in the huddle. Key returners include first-team, all-district selections Draden Moss, Ivy Oliver and Lindsey Vlasak, second-teamer Helen Rieke and honorable mention, all-district picks Brooke Kearns and Emily Clanton.
The motto for the Mustangs this year is #AIAOAS – All In, All Out, All Season.”
17 -- FRIENDSWOOD MUSTANGS
Danny Russell has flipped the script inside of Friendswood basketball. Coming over from Katy High two years ago,
Russell is a perfect fit for the Mustangs.
With a brand-new facility and several returners back from a 24-11 team, Friendswood is trending.
The ‘Stangs fell 48-46 in a third-round, heart-breaker to State Semifinalist FB Marshall, leaving a bad taste in the mouths of returning stars Dyllan Baker and Chase Richardson. The pair are back in the stable after combining for 26 points per game.
“We are inviting the high expectations,” Russell said. “Our guard play is really solid, and we can get the ball out of the net and run. We like to play fast and it’s a fun style of ball.”
Ronin Passons, Luke Hinchcliffe and Brady Fiesinger will also be big-time contributors as they look for a district title and beyond.
