The Fulshear Chargers will be gunning for the UIL State volleyball championship Saturday afternoon in Garland, and you can listen to the Chargers' title match vs. Hereford on vypefortbend.com, starting at approximately 12:45PM. Roger Smith will be providing the play-by-play, courtside, from the Curtis Culwell Center.
In just their third varsity season, all under the guidance of Head Coach Sydney Gotcher, Fulshear (44-4) has ripped through its first six playoff opponents without dropping a game and is ranked 50th in Texas among all UIL teams regardless of classification. Thursday night in Garland, the Chargers blew out Kennedale, 25-14, 25-11 and 25-20. Fulshear has won 18 of its last 19 matches, with the only loss amounting to an exhibition – a 3-1 defeat vs. Episcopal on Nov. 1 that was just a tune-up for the playoffs. The Chargers didn't drop a single game while winning District 25-4A with an immaculate 12-0 record, and their last match loss before Episcopal was 3-2 vs. Class 6A Katy, a team that advanced to the third round of the playoffs.
Junior Ellie Echter and Sophomore Alexis Dacosta lead the Chargers in kills with more than 300 each.
The Chargers, however, will be facing an opponent that has just about as much momentum. Hereford (34-13) beat Carthage Thursday in the other 4A semi-final, 25-18, 25-19 and 25-23. The Whitefaces have lost only one game during six-match playoff win streak, Nov. 7 vs. Andrews. They are ranked 59th statewide.
