INSTANT REACTION: Pleasant Grove Uses Strong Run Game for 2nd State Title
ARLINGTON - For the second straight game on Friday, #bEASTTEXAS walked away with a 4A crown as Texarkana Pleasant Grove used a dominating ground attack and strong defensive effort on the way to a 35-21 win over Wimberley in the 4A Division II State Championship.
The game got off to a fast start as KJ Hicks ran back the opening kickoff 88 yards to give Pleasant Grove (15-1) an early lead. Wimberley evened things up midway through the quarter and the teams traded touchdowns on consecutive possessions to make it 14-14.
After that point, Pleasant Grove began to assert itself on the defensive end and limit Wimberley's attack to just 48 yards in the second quarter, 47 in the third and 75 in the fourth - most of which came on the late score with the game well out of hand.
Offensive MVP Bruce Garrett racked up 254 yards on 25 carries and three touchdowns to lead Pleasant Grove. KJ Hicks added 88 and as a team, Pleasant Grove piled up 397 rushing yards, which contributed a more than seven minute advantage in time of possession.
It's the second state title for Pleasant Grove in a three-year stretch where it has made the finals.
