Ethan Oceguera had a spectacular season in 2019 for the Bridge City Cardinals. The sophomore had over 1,000 total yards in passing (528 yds) and rushing (502 yds). Oceguera led BC to a bi-district playoff appearance and will look to be a major player in 2020.
VYPE caught up with Oceguera during this quarantine period to see how Bridge City is handling the stay-at-home order and what's new in Cardinal land.
...
VYPE: During this time of quarantine what are you doing as an athlete to stay in shape and keep engaged with your coach and teammates?
Oceguera: During the quarantine, I've been taking advantage of the extra time off to stay active. As an athlete I think it's important to stay physically and mentally strong; whether it's working out, running, drills or even riding bikes with my family. Coach has been giving the team workouts and my team and I have been staying in touch and keeping each other accountable.
VYPE: Explain a typical day in your life with the stay-at-home order and how are you engaging with your school work and personal life?
Oceguera: A typical day for me during the stay at home order usually begins with checking in with my teachers and completing my school work. Once that's done, my main focus is getting out of the house. I tend to workout once in the morning and again in the evening, this helps clear my head and stay positive. And then, at the end of the day, I finish off with a little bit of PlayStation with the boys.
VYPE: You're heading into your junior season with the Cardinals, what are your individual goals as you are coming off an all-district season from 2019? You were the #5 QB (passing) and the #5 RB (rushing).
Oceguera: Heading into my junior season with the Cardinals, one of my personal goals is becoming more comfortable with the offense and my receivers. Missing the last three games of last season makes me want to come back even stronger for my team this year. My main goal is improving my role as a leader on and off the field. I want to be someone my teammates can rely on.
VYPE: The Cardinals had a playoff season in 2019. Give us a sense on what Bridge City Football will be like like this fall.
Oceguera: This upcoming season we have big shoes to fill after losing 21 seniors. Our team will be pretty young this season, but once everyone gets settled in we will be set for district.
VYPE: What is your 2-5 year plan of being an athlete? Are you looking to play at the next level?
Oceguera: Looking into my future as an athlete, I want to play at the next level. Only having 2 years left as a Cardinal I plan to work even harder and attend as many camps as I can for exposure. I'm passionate about football, and I want to play wherever I can for as long as I can.
VYPE: What do you want your legacy to be at Bridge City once you leave in 2 years?
Oceguera: It's hard to believe I only have 2 years left in Bridge City, but when I do leave I want to be remembered as the quarterback who was a good student-athlete. I work hard on the field, but I also work hard in the classroom. I hold myself to high standards and want to be the best role model I can for the Cardinals that come after me.
