Clare Powers Named SPX Head Volleyball Coach
St. Pius X High School is happy to announce that Clare Powers has been named the new head volleyball coach, and will begin her career with the Panthers with the 2019-2020 school year. She will also be joining the SPX faculty as an English teacher.
“We are excited to have Clare joining us here at SPX; she will be a true asset to our community,” said Carmen Garrett Armistead, head of school. “Clare brings phenomenal experience in playing and coaching volleyball and we cannot wait to see what she will do with our girls.”
Currently, Powers is finishing her master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction in Education, Educational Leadership and Sports Management from Texas Tech University. She also serves as a post-graduate intern with the school’s volleyball program. Previously, she played at Penn State, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in print and digital journalism with a minor in English while serving as team captain for the volleyball team. Powers appeared in 22 matches at outside hitter for the Nittany Lions during the 2016-17 school year, which finished the season ranked number three in the nation. Prior to that, Powers played for Saint Mary’s College where she was West Coast Conference All-Freshman selection.
In her high school career at Archbishop Mitty in San Jose, Calif., Powers was a four-year letter winner, two-year All-American and All-State player, and helped win back-to-back state championships in 2012 and 2013, including a perfect 38-0 mark during the 2012 season. She also played club volleyball with Vision Volleyball out of San Jose, Calif.
Powers has served as head men’s volleyball coach for Archbishop Mitty High School, and has four-years of experience working with the Special Olympics in volleyball.
“I am thrilled to have this opportunity and cannot wait to join this community that believes in excellence both on and off the field,” Powers said. “I am humbled and honored for the opportunity. I can't wait to get working on and off the court."
VYPE is excited to be part of the next chapter of St. Pius X volleyball and wishes Coach Powers the best of luck!
