PREVIEW: Burleson Centennial ready to avenge themselves
Building on the strength of recent seasons, the Burleson Centennial Spartans are ready to fly high this season. In the third place spot on the VYPE DFW 5A Preseason Football Rankings, the Spartans can be expected to have a great season. VYPE DFW jumps right into it:
REWIND
Last season, the Spartans had a strong playoff run after finishing second in their district-- just behind Aledo-- with a 7-1 district record. With an 86% winning percentage on the season, Burleson Centennial outscored their opponents by a combined 300 points. Opening their preseason play against Burleson, the team opened their year on a six-game win streak defeating Burleson (42-13) and Frisco (35-14) before taking down Saginaw (65-0), The Colony (49-10), Fort Worth South Hills (63-0), and Denton Ryan (23-16) in a dominating fashion through the first half of district play.
Their only district loss came against a tough Aledo team. After regrouping, the Spartans closed out district play with more victories before heading into playoffs. In the playoffs, the Spartans defeated Lake Belton (56-28), Amarillo's Tascosa (31-7), and Abilene (24-14) before falling to Aledo in a hard-fought 42-21 battle.
LOOKING AHEAD
As the team prepares to open their season against Burleson on Friday, August 25, there is no doubt that they have what it takes to post another strong fall record. Looking to get right back on track with where they were last season, fans can expect the Spartans to put everything they have into their opponents. After a non-district schedule that will allow them the opportunity to gather their power, the team will begin district play where they can be expected to have no trouble working through their schedule.
Damien Long, Mateo Ramirez, Iverson Moore, Jack Long, Brandon McMillen, Jacob Landenberger, Johan Esparza, Johnny Van Cleef, and more can be expected to make big plays against their opponents this season. With the fire to compete against strong teams and the willingness to take down anyone who stands in their way, these athletes are ready to get the job done this season!
