VYPE U Names To Know: Clay’s Top 5 2021 Offensive Skill Players in Texas
Number 1: Camar Wheaton, Lakeview Centennial - Running Back
First thing's first: Wheaton is the best running back in Texas entering the offseason. Cy-Fair's LJ Johnson may have something to say about that, but as of now Wheaton is the best prospect in the state at the position. His blend of speed, explosion, power and quickness make him one of the most hard-to-miss players in the country. But above all, Wheaton's vision is what makes schools drool over him. On the recruiting side of things, no school is too far out in front of another. Oklahoma and Texas have generated the most buzz so far, but it wouldn't come as too much of a shock to see Alabama and LSU get involved, along with Texas A&M, for the nasty lone-star state runner. Wheaton hasn't taken two many visits, but between his visits to Tuscaloosa, Austin, Norman and College Station, this recruitment should be a wild ride for anyone involved in the national top-10 player's process.
Number 2: Eli Stowers, Denton Guyer - Quarterback
One of the most physically impressive quarterbacks to come out of the state of Texas, Denton Guyer's Eli Stowers stands at 6'4", 215, and can do just about everything a quarterback possibly can. He's an elite passer, a talented runner, and has a good head on his shoulders to go with his high-performance in the classroom. Just watch 2 minutes of his junior film, and you'll understand why he's a top-10 player in the state. Stowers is currently committed to Texas A&M and has been since July 2 of 2019, and has yet to waiver from his pledge to Jimbo Fisher. Fisher has a solid history of developing quarterbacks, so Stowers couldn't wait any longer to jump on board. As good as he is now, the high-profile QB's potential is sky high and is only going to get better through the offseason, his senior season, and his time with Fisher in College Station.
Number 3: LJ Johnson, Cy-Fair - Running Back
With Wheaton headlining the running back position in the state, Cy-Fair's LJ Johnson doesn't get nearly as much attention as he should. At 5'10", 205, the powerful, shifty back is set to turn some heads this season and make another deep run in the playoffs. When you look and see that he ran for nearly 2000 yards and 37 touchdowns in 2019, it's not hard to see why he's such a highly coveted guy by programs like Alabama, LSU, and Ohio State. Johnson already has the opportunity to play wherever he wants, but by the time his senior season starts kicking off, even more schools and coaches will come crawling to his door, making a case as to why he should play at their respective school. And although his junior season was one for the ages, expect even bigger things from the high 4-star runner in 2020. Don't be surprised to see the senior lead his team on a nasty run to the state championship, and watch him snag his 5th star by the time it's time to sign in December or February.
Number 4: Quaydarius Davis, Dallas Skyline - Wide Receiver
The former Texas commit is one of the flat out nastiest wide receivers to come out of the state in a long time. Between his speed and quickness and his reliable hands, it's not hard to see why he's such a highly recruited guy. With massive arms, ridiculous quickness, and his ability to run away from defenders, Quay is undoubtedly a top-10 receiver in the nation, and top-2 in the state. He was originally committed to SMU early in his process, but after offers started pouring in, he quickly realized that he wanted to play for Tom Herman and Texas, committing in June after a solid visit to Austin. However, Davis decommitted from the Longhorns in November, and shortly thereafter released a top 5 of LSU, Texas, Alabama, Florida, and Texas A&M. Right now, Texas and LSU are thought to be the leaders with Texas still looking as the favorite, but there's still a lot of time until Signing Day so we'll get to see how this recruitment shakes out through a monster senior season from the elite wide receiver.
Number 5: Cody Jackson, Richmond Foster - Wide Receiver
After 30 seconds of watching his tape, it's not hard to see why Jackson is so highly touted by Lincoln Riley and the staff in Norman. His breakaway speed and ability to make any catch in the game is what makes him so irreplaceable for the Foster offense. He can grab balls over, under, or through defenders, but he's more than likely going to run past them before they can contest him for a deep ball. And with the big-play ability comes the ability to gain separation AFTER he's caught the football, and being able to shake the defense left and right with the ball in his hands. Jackson has been committed to Oklahoma since April, and hasn't wavered a single bit, with the potential to become the next CeeDee Lamb, who also happened to attend Richmond Foster 4 years ago. Since his commitment, Jackson has picked up a handful more of impressive offers, but as of now, it looks like the future 5-star is Boomer Sooner bound.
