The Blocked PAT heard around the Metroplex: McKinney Boyd outlasts Byron Nelson with a 28-26 victory
Led by junior quarterback Ryan Shackleton and senior wide receiver Caden Park, the McKinney Boyd Broncos have advanced to a 4-0 start on the season after a close 28-26 victory over Trophy Club Byron Nelson; their first 4-0 start in program history.
Thursday night saw a lot of physical play from both squads from the moment they stepped onto the field until the final whistle. With an early 10-0 lead, the Broncos set the pace the entire game; leading 13-7 as they entered halftime.
Byron Nelson came out of halftime ready to show their muscles to eventually take the lead for a short while, but a late fourth quarter blocked extra point sealed the deal for the McKinney Boyd Broncos.
With a 26-26 tied game, McKinney Boyd senior cornerback/slotback, Evan Dennis blocked what could have been a game-winning extra point for Byron Nelson. Running the ball all the way back for a Broncos' score, Dennis became the hero of the game giving the Broncos the ball with enough time for Shackleton to take a knee and run out the clock.
Shackleton threw for 211 yards and two touchdowns. On the receiving end of both passing touchdowns was Park who totaled 170 yards on the night with six catches and three carries. On the ground, senior running back Carter Whitefield scored a touchdown of his own with 76 rushing yards on 20 carries.
