VYPE/ESPN Austin Radio Central Texas Game of the Week Recap Hutto holds off Cedar Ridge
It was an almost historic occasion the last time the Hutto Hippos were involved in the VYPE/ESPN Austin radio Central Texas Game of the Week on 102.7 FM. In that wild contest last season, Liberty Hill outlasted the Hippos 82-80. (Not a typo!)
It wasn’t quite that crazy Friday night (9/13), but it was close as the Hippos held off Cedar Ridge 63-56 to open District 25-6A play for both teams.
Like last year’s Game of the Week, the offenses were in command throughout the night with the Hippos pulling out to a 42-28 lead – and that was just at the half. Hutto (2-1, 1-0) stretched the lead to 56-28 early in the fourth quarter and seemed to have the game in-hand. That’s when Cedar Ridge (0-3, 0-1) mounted a late charge to tie the game at 56-all with under five minutes remaining. Hutto junior quarterback Jaden Stefak tossed his fourth touchdown pass of the night to finally break a 28-0 Raiders scoring run and secure the hard-fought district win.
Stefak went 16-32 for 231 yards and four touchdowns to pace the Hutto attack while junior running back Keilan Chavies rushed 12 times for 132 yards and two scores.
Hutto heads to Manor Friday night while Cedar Ridge looks for their first win of the season against Westwood.
VYPE/ESPN Austin Central Texas Game of the Week Preview: Hutto vs. Cedar Ridge
The Hutto Hippos have endured UIL-induced journeys to the hinterlands of Killeen, Waco, College Station and points in-between for the past two seasons as part of a hodge-podge district. Thanks to the latest round of redistricting, however, the Hippos are back closer to home, once again part of an expanded nine-team District 25-6A for at least the next two years. Hutto opens district play against Cedar Ridge on Friday night from Hutto Memorial Stadium in the VYPE Central Texas High School Football Game of the Week on 102.7 FM ESPN Austin.
After throttling San Marcos to open the season, head coach William Compton’s Hutto squad is coming off a controversial 31-29 loss at Converse Judson and takes a 1-1 mark into district play. Junior quarterback Kaden Stefek (25-38, 496 yds., 8 TDs) leads a young Hutto offense, often targeting senior Braeton Anderson and sophomore Jaiden Fields. Junior running back Keilan Chavies (25-180, 5.1 YPC) provides balance on the ground.
Junior Brayden Daniel (13.5 T/G, 5 TFL, 1.5 sacks) and senior Cashton La Plante 11.0 T/G, 2 TFL, 0.5 sacks) pace Hutto’s stingy defense.
The Cedar Ridge Raiders have struggled to an 0-2 start under longtime head coach Sam Robinson, falling to Buda Johnson and Waco Midway in non-district play. Senior quarterback Cash Pullin (33-52, 477 yds., 5 TDs, INT) has put up decent numbers, most often finding junior Tyler Seith (10-224, 22.4 YPC, 3 TDs.)
