A Look Back
Going for their fourth state title since 2015 (2015, '18, '19), the team is ready to do whatever it takes to accomplish their goals this season. Starting it off with a bang, Argyle didn't hesitate to fight hard against each of their opponents through preseason or district play. The team has lost only three games this season while posting a 91% winning percentage and outscoring their opponents by a combined 273-86 so far on the season. Going undefeated in district play, the Eagles set the tone for playoffs and have allowed only nine runs in playoffs.
Who To Watch
Senior pitcher Evan Brandt has posted an undefeated season on the mound. Brandt has gone 14-0 while recording spectacular wins en route to the state tournament. Senior Ryan Hulke has been a force at the plate, making big, timely hits when the team needs them the most. Hiltke is batting .400. Junior J.C. Davis is batting .396 and can be expected to play strong against China Spring. Leading on offense, though, might be one of the major keys to Argyle's success in the semifinals: sophomore Alex D'Angelo has a .450 batting average and plays smart, quick offense.
China Spring (32-8)
China Spring has a tough group of athletes ready to do whatever it takes to get their first state title in 35 years- they will stop at nothing to shut down the power of Argyle. Led by junior Trevor Black (.467), sophomore TCU commit Cage McCloud (.406, 8-3 from the mound), Murray State signee Trace Necessary (.414), the offense can be expected to hit hard against Argyle.
What To Expect:
China Spring won't be easy for Argyle. The two teams met earlier this season in a preseason matchup where Argyle posted a 6-0 victory. Knowing what kind of fast-paced play each other has on the diamond, both teams will be highly alert and highly competitive throughout the game. Fans can expect Argyle to put up the fight of their lives in order to advance to the State Finals.
The game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at UFCU Disch Falk Field in Austin, Texas.
UIL Will Not Award Lone Star Cup, Releases Final Standings
AUSTIN, Texas – The University Interscholastic League (UIL) has released standings for the Lone Star Cup through March 13, 2020. Due to the cancellation of UIL spring events, the Lone Star Cup will not be awarded for the 2019-20 school year.
All UIL sanctioned contests were suspended on March 13, 2020, and later cancelled, in an effort to support the health and safety of Texas students and communities during the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, many activities that earn points toward the UIL Lone Star Cup were not completed. These events included Boys Basketball, Robotics FIRST, Soccer, Academics, One-Act Play, Golf, Tennis, Track & Field, Softball, and Baseball.
The UIL Lone Star Cup recognizes the top high school in each UIL conference based on overall team achievement in sanctioned academic, athletic and music championships. This marks the first year the UIL Lone Star Cup has not been awarded since the program began during the 1997-98 school year.
Below are the Top 25 UIL Lone Star Cup standings for the 2019-20 school year. Standings include: Team Tennis, Cross Country, Marching Band, Volleyball, Robotics BEST, Football, Congress, Spirit, Swimming & Diving, Wrestling, Mariachi, Film, Girls Basketball, Boys Basketball (through March 13, 2020) and Theatrical Design.
