PREVIEW: Denton Guyer Wildcat football is ready to pounce
After a state championship game appearance in the 2021-22 season, the Wildcats fell just short of another appearance last season. This year, the team sits in the third place spot on the VYPE DFW 6A Football Preseason Rankings as they look toward a hopeful season.
REWIND
After dropping a 40-21 state championship match against Austin Westlake in 2021, the team was bound and determined to have an amazing 2022-23 season. Using their non-district opportunities to play against teams that are known for being tough, the Wildcats sharpened their skills while defeating Rockwall-Heath (47-14), Aledo (44-14), and Lancaster (50-7) before heading into district play.
Going undefeated in district play, the team posted several impressive victories over Prosper (23-6), McKinney Boyd (56-7), Allen (49-7), and more before securing their spot in the playoffs. Sending Flower Mound Marcus (42-7), Highland Park (63-42), Trophy Club Bryon Nelson (59-41), and Southlake Carroll (45-21) packing, the team had a hard-fought playoff run before falling to eventual state champions DeSoto in a 47-28 loss.
LOOKING AHEAD
Ready to get back on track, Denton Guyer can be expected to pull out all the stops this season. The team opens their season on the road against Rockwall-Heath on August 25th before facing down the rest of their preseason schedule (Aledo and Lancaster). Looking to begin the season in the same way as they did last year, the Wildcats are going to come out in full force with a pace of play that could prove difficult to keep up with for their opponents.
Kegan Stelmazewski, Jackson Shockley, Caleb Darthard, Ahmed Yussuf, Sterling Schneider, DJ Black, Xavier Ukponu, among others are all athletes fans should keep their eye on this season. Ready to make big plays, the team can be expected to put up a strong district record as they face the likes of Denton Braswell, Allen, McKinney, and more. District play begins on September 15th against Prosper in Prosper.
