5 Big Takeaways from Katy vs Tompkins game
The Katy Tigers extended their 11-year run of district wins last night in a 35-30 win over Tompkins at Legacy Stadium.
The city had the opportunity to witness one of the best games this year on the KUBE 57 Game of the Week as these two teams squared off for the district title.
A district title the first weekend of October? Yes, no one is going to push these two the rest of the season.
So with tons of stars on display, what did we learn?

- 1. Jalen Milroe is the TRUTH…
When the junior verballed to Texas, it turned some heads. Mine included, but Milroe was magical. He can throw the deep ball as accurate as I've seen in some time. His accuracy is elite when on the move as well. He can improvise and keeps his eyes downfield as long as possible. He was 19-28 for 407 yards and three scores. He did have one INT, but he doesn't give up. He also has a pair of BIG-TIME receivers in Conner Kinslow and Gabe Atkin.
- 2. Young Katy Defense Makes Plays
The Tigers were hurt a little in the passing game, but Katy's scheme and defensive play calls are always spot-on. The blitzing patterns come from all directions and it feels like there are 15 players on the field. Bryan Massey (UTSA) and Jaylen Phillips are tremendous senior leaders, but Ty Cana, Malick Sylla and Hunter Washington are DUDES. They are SOPHOMORES. Cana is a 6-foot-2 middle LB, who is all over the field. Sylla has the prototypical DE body at 6-foot-4. He's active and will fill out to be a freak. Junior Shepherd Bowling is great on the delayed blitz and Washington can cover and tackle. He was a little frustrated and missed some plays, but he is a star in the making.
- 3. Patrick, Smith are Under-Recruited
Katy WR Jordan Patrick and Tompkins RB RJ Smith are great High School football players. In the recruiting world – that means undersized. Well, a low to mid-DI should take a flier on both of these guys. Patrick is a PLAYMAKER, whether it's catching balls downfield against North Shore or breaking a game open on a punt return for a score against Tompkins. Dude is a stud. Smith hasn't run for over 3,000 yards on luck. He has great vision, patience and versatility coming out of the backfield. He's a great student as well.
- 4. The Little Things
To beat Katy, you need to play a perfect game. Why? Because the Tigers do. Katy threw an interception on the second play of the game, but that was about it. They work the clock with a demoralizing running game; QB Bronson McClellan's play fakes freeze the defense; special teams are virtually perfect and the Tigers are elite tacklers. Tompkins had crucial turnovers and Katy took advantage.
- 5. Seven Lakes Plays a Role Here
Really? If Seven Lakes can muster up a few district wins and make the postseason, that would allow for Katy to go Class 6A DI and Tompkins to go DII. That would give Katy ISD a legit shot at having two teams make a deep postseason run, possibility to state. Mayde Creek is in the way, however, as the Rams are 5-0 for the first time in school history. Great job Mayde Creek. Impressive start.
