PREVIEW: Melissa Football debuts new stadium in season opener
After an incredible season last year, the Melissa Cardinals are looking to start their 2023-24 season strong-- this time in a brand new stadium! The Cardinals will host their season opener this week as they look to start what could be another deep playoff run. What can fans expect from Melissa this fall? VYPE DFW dives right in to the program:
REWIND
Facing tough non-district opponents, the Cardinals started their 2022-23 campaign with two losses to Argyle (37-18) and China Spring (42-41). With the ability to regroup and bounce back, the team defeated Royse City (48-24) before entering district play. Going 7-0 in district play and finishing at the top of their district standings with victories over the likes of Crandall (50-22), Terrell (56-21), Denison (54-44), Lucas Lovejoy (36-35), and more, the team eased their way into playoffs.
Once in playoffs, Melissa took down Hallsville (57-20), Ennis (42-38), and Terrell (42-21) before falling to eventual state champion South Oak Cliff (30-16).
LOOKING AHEAD
The team gears up to take on the new season in a brand-new stadium. With athletes like Landen Brandow, Lincoln Dunn, Nigel Smith, Nathan Adejo, Khristian Turner, Jackson Ford, Trever Ham, Gunnar Wilson, Jason Anunobi, and more, the team can be expected to post a strong start to their non-district schedule as they host Argyle on August 25th.
With the determination to make a convincing run toward state, fans can expect this experienced squad to cook with gas this fall. Facing tough non-district opponents will prove to prepare the team for their district schedule against Crandall, Mesquite Poteet, Greenville, and more. With the fire to smoke through their schedule again, there's a good chance we will see another strong playoff push from the Cardinals.
PREVIEW: Glen Rose football demands attention
Putting themselves on the map and drawing attention to their style of play, the Glen Rose Tigers sit at the number three spot on the VYPE DFW 1A-4A Preseason Football Rankings this year. Demanding recognition, the Tigers can be expected to put in more hard work this fall. VYPE DFW dives into it:
REWIND
After opening their season in dominating fashion posting non-district victories over Grandview, Gatesville, and Graham, the team posted only one loss in the regular season-- a 17-3 loss to Brownwood in a non-district matchup. Following their loss, the team was able to focus on the rest of the games ahead, not willing to give anything less than their best against the rest of their schedule.
Through district play, the team posted an undefeated 5-0 record to finish at the top of their district. With big victories over Venus (69-0), Godley (69-35), Hillsboro (63-13), Benbrook (58-0), and Ferris (56-27) the team was able to easily trot into the playoffs. Once in playoffs, fans watched as the Tigers left everything on the field game in and game out against their opponents. Glen Rose took down Graham (55-14), Fort Stockton (63-13), Wichita Falls Hirschi (45-20), and Monahans (62-14) before falling to Carthage in a hard-fought 42-35 battle.
LOOKING AHEAD
With plenty of experience against strong opponents, the Tigers are looking to have another season in which they plow over those who stand between them and the playoffs. Glen Rose will open their schedule on Friday, August 25th against Grandview during an away game in which fans will get their first look at the dedication the team has this season. From there, the team will go head-to-head against Gatesville, Brownwood, and Springtown to finish out their non-district play.
When district starts in October, the Tigers will play Venus in front of a home crowd. The opportunity to start 4-0 headed into playoffs will fall into the hands of this determined squad. Willing to go the extra mile every single day, fans can expect to see big things from athletes like Josiah Groeneweg, Gage Edgar, Adrian Sanchez, Canyon Evans, Brodey Bowman, Uli Muro, Kaleb Baker, Gastin McGarity, Caden McKenzie, and more this season.
