STATE SEMIFINALS: Grapevine heads back to the state tournament
For the first time in seven seasons, the Grapevine Mustangs baseball program is making their way back to the UIL Baseball State Tournament. As the team prepares to take on Leander Rouse, VYPE DFW takes a look at their season so far!
So Far
With only five losses to their name this season, the Mustangs have made it their mission to take down the opponents that get in their way of success this year. Posting a 38-5 overall record (13-1 in district play), the team has recorded an outstanding 88% winning percentage while outscoring their opponents by a combined 240 runs so far this season. Their run of excellence began early this year as they started their season with a statement 13-1 victory over Cigarroa in non-district play.
Moving through their non-district opponents and focusing on district, the team powered through as they took down the likes of Birdbille, Denton Ryan, Lake Dallas, Argyle, Denton, and more; securing their spot in the playoffs with the hopes of making it a deep run. So far, the team has been able to showcase a dominant style of play over the likes of Mansfield Timberview, Justin Northwest, Wichita Falls Rider, Lubbock-Cooper, and, most recently, Argyle in order to set their sights on the state tournament.
What to Expect
The team is hunting for a semifinal victory as they enter the state tournament against a tough Leander Rouse team that boasts a 34-9 overall record. Led by the likes of Zackary Goldstein, Brenton Lee, Colin Park, Luke Schreyer, Luke Bajaj, Blaine Swartz, and other talented athletes, the Mustangs have what it takes to put in a strong effort. Looking to play with smooth defense while the offense makes timely hits, Grapevine fans can expect this squad to do whatever it takes to make it to the next stage of the tournament-- the finals!
PREVIEW: Grapevine Mustangs Continue Building A Legacy
The Grapevine Lady Mustangs have been consistently one of the best teams in the Dallas-Fort Worth area when it comes to their soccer program. Appearing in six state tournaments (2015, '16, '18', '21, '22, '23) and winning the title last season, the squad is looking to secure another spot at the tournament for the fourth consecutive season. VYPE DFW takes a look at the team:
Rewind
Posting an impressive 12-3-2 overall record last season (12-0-2 in district play), the Lady Mustangs convincingly dominated the field. Beginning their season with a couple of losses to Frisco Wakeland (3-2) and Dripping Springs (3-2) didn't deter this team from putting forth the effort necessary to take back control of the reins. Their only other loss of the season was still early in non-district play against a tough Byron Nelson team (4-0). Through the rest of non-district play, the team posted plenty of victories over the likes of Liberty Hill (2-1), Stratford (3-1), Belton (1-0), Palo Duro (8-0), South Grand Prairie (3-0), and more before entering district play.
In district play, the team didn't lose any of their games. Opening with a draw to Birdville, the Lady Mustangs were able to focus their efforts on the rest of their schedule as they went on to defeat Denton Ryan (4-0, 8-0), Lake Dallas (2-0, 4-1), Denton (8-0), Colleyville Heritage (5-1), and others en route to the playoffs. Finishing at the top of their district, the team was able to enter the playoffs with high confidence.
Securing hard-fought victories over Joshua, Justin Northwest, Midlothian, Abilene, Wichita Falls Rider, Smithson Valley, and eventually Frisco in the state title match, the Lady Mustangs capped their season with a crown and the program's first state title.
This Season
Graduating more than a handful of seniors, Grapevine is still looking at bringing back several talented athletes. Sienna Alexander, Rowan Truman, Haley Jones, Mariah Segovia, Laney Drysdale, Emily Ihrig, Caroline Martin, Isabella Lastinger, Jaidyn Gigowski, and others, this squad is prepared to take on the toughest situations and power through them.
The team's first matchup is against Forney after the new year. Looking to open up on a high note and set the tone early in the season, the fans can expect a tough district run for the Lady Mustangs. Facing down the likes of Dallas Wilson, Celina, Tomball, Amarillo, and more, non-district play will get them more than ready for district where they will play against Denton Ryan, Richland, Denton, and more looking for another playoff appearance-- and another state title.
