PREVIEW: Grapevine Mustangs Continue Building A Legacy
The Grapevine Lady Mustangs have been consistently one of the best teams in the Dallas-Fort Worth area when it comes to their soccer program. Appearing in six state tournaments (2015, '16, '18', '21, '22, '23) and winning the title last season, the squad is looking to secure another spot at the tournament for the fourth consecutive season. VYPE DFW takes a look at the team:
Rewind
Posting an impressive 12-3-2 overall record last season (12-0-2 in district play), the Lady Mustangs convincingly dominated the field. Beginning their season with a couple of losses to Frisco Wakeland (3-2) and Dripping Springs (3-2) didn't deter this team from putting forth the effort necessary to take back control of the reins. Their only other loss of the season was still early in non-district play against a tough Byron Nelson team (4-0). Through the rest of non-district play, the team posted plenty of victories over the likes of Liberty Hill (2-1), Stratford (3-1), Belton (1-0), Palo Duro (8-0), South Grand Prairie (3-0), and more before entering district play.
In district play, the team didn't lose any of their games. Opening with a draw to Birdville, the Lady Mustangs were able to focus their efforts on the rest of their schedule as they went on to defeat Denton Ryan (4-0, 8-0), Lake Dallas (2-0, 4-1), Denton (8-0), Colleyville Heritage (5-1), and others en route to the playoffs. Finishing at the top of their district, the team was able to enter the playoffs with high confidence.
Securing hard-fought victories over Joshua, Justin Northwest, Midlothian, Abilene, Wichita Falls Rider, Smithson Valley, and eventually Frisco in the state title match, the Lady Mustangs capped their season with a crown and the program's first state title.
This Season
Graduating more than a handful of seniors, Grapevine is still looking at bringing back several talented athletes. Sienna Alexander, Rowan Truman, Haley Jones, Mariah Segovia, Laney Drysdale, Emily Ihrig, Caroline Martin, Isabella Lastinger, Jaidyn Gigowski, and others, this squad is prepared to take on the toughest situations and power through them.
The team's first matchup is against Forney after the new year. Looking to open up on a high note and set the tone early in the season, the fans can expect a tough district run for the Lady Mustangs. Facing down the likes of Dallas Wilson, Celina, Tomball, Amarillo, and more, non-district play will get them more than ready for district where they will play against Denton Ryan, Richland, Denton, and more looking for another playoff appearance-- and another state title.
SEMIFINALS PREVIEW: Grapevine vs. Wakeland
The Grapevine Lady Mustangs and the Frisco Wakeland Lady Wolverines are set to face off in a semifinal match on Tuesday evening. Before they meet, let's take a look at what got each team to this level.
Grapevine Lady Mustangs
The Lady Mustangs have been a force to be reckoned with all season. Going nearly undefeated in district play to finish first in their district, Grapevine has posted a 24-2-2 overall record (13-1 in district) this season. The Lady Mustangs have posted big wins this season over the likes of Justin Northwest, Denton Ryan, Richland, Lake Dallas, and more.
Grapevine has outscored their opponents by 92 goals so far this season. After a 3-1 win over Amarillo last week, the Lady Mustangs are coming into the semifinals on a 16 game win-streak.
Wakeland Lady Wolverines
The Lady Wolverines have shown no signs of quitting as they've moved through this season. Wakeland has posted a 19-2-3 overall record with an 85% win percentage en route to one of their best seasons yet. This season, the Lady Wolverines have posted 16 shutout wins, four of which came in the playoffs.
After a hard-fought 2-1 win in double overtime over a previously undefeated Highland Park team last week, the Lady Wolverines are coming into the semifinals matchup on a high. Wakeland has a fire that has not been able to be tamed on a 12 game win streak.
What To Expect
Grapevine's defense has shown its strength all season. It has been no different in the playoffs. Both teams have shown that they have what it takes offensively. Both teams are sure to put up a fight for the right to play at the state championship game this weekend.
The match is set to begin Tuesday, April 13 at 7 p.m. at Bronco Stadium in Denton.
