THE NEED FOR SPEED: The Woodlands peaking at right time; gallery
Over 2017 and 2018, The Woodlands High School won a pair of track and field state championships with the likes of Kesean Carter, Jake Lanier, Ethan Bonner, Jacob Barrett, D’Angelo Alexander, Mac Gregg and Tripp Piperi carrying the banner.
They set the state and national record for the 4x200 relay in 2018.
Six years later, the names are different, but the result could be the same. Tyler Honeyman, Iliya Dryaba, Perry Watkins and Aden Self (Army football signee) are this season’s headliners and coach Juris Green has tweaked the relays to be peaking at the right time.
On the girls side, it’s Gia Kurp (Texas), Sabrinah Booker, Aaliyah Redzic (Arkansas-Little Rock), Darasimi Odelowo and Gray Rabel. The 4x400 is their strongest relay.
VYPE’s Matt Malatesta caught up with the top runners at The Woodlands to talk about their run to State.
