THE PLAYMAKERS powered by UTMB-Health: South Houston stars shine in postseason
The south Houston area is loaded with talented athletes who give it their all in their respective fields of play.
Welcome to the VYPE Playmakers powered by UTMB Health, where we’re highlighting five standouts from the previous week who stole the headlines. Here are the UTMB Athletes of the Week--Spring Playoffs Edition!
Sa'Mya Jones, Dawson Softball
Juan De Leon (VYPE)
Dawson enjoyed a tone-setting series against Clear Springs in the 6A Bi-District Championship.
Having won back-to-back games (Game 1: 6-2, Game 2: 6-3), a decent portion of the credit should go to Eagles junior SS/OF Sa’Mya Jones, who went 3-for-6 with an RBI and three runs scored.
Jones will play a key factor in Dawson’s offense as they take on Atascocita in the Area Round this weekend.
Ben Hughes, LSA Track & Field
Bradley C. Collier (VYPE)
Lutheran South Academy had quite the showing in the TAPPS South Regional Meet this past week.
With over a dozen LSA athletes headed to Midway ISD’s Panther Stadium this week, the Pioneers will be represented in the State Meet.
Junior Ben Hughes will be one of those athletes competing for gold in the State Meet, following his remarkable performance at Regionals. He starred in the Long Jump with a winning jump of 21-04.00.
Charleigh Esparza, Friendswood Softball
Juan De Leon (VYPE)
Friendswood’s roster is loaded from top to bottom, which was made evident by their series sweep (Game 1: 7-0, Game 2: 10-0) against Shadow Creek in the opening round of the UIL 5A softball playoffs.
One of the key contributors to the Mustangs’ offensive success was sophomore C/IF Charleigh Esparza.
During the two-game series, Esparza went 5 of 6 with 7 RBIs to set the tone for Friendswood as they advanced to the Area Round.
With Lamar Consolidated on tap, keep an eye out for this Friendswood sophomore to make some more noise.
Alec Beversdorf, Clear Falls Baseball
Juan De Leon (VYPE)
As Clear Falls prepares to take on Dawson in the first round of the UIL postseason, coach Eddie Youngblood will look to his ace on the mound, Alec Beversdorf (Sr. RHP), to set the tone for the series.
The LSU-Eunice signee has enjoyed an impressive career on the diamond for the Knights, becoming the all-time leader in career strikeouts for the program with 193 and counting.
Clear Falls reached the Area Round in 2022, but with Beversdorf at the top of his game, who’s to say they won’t go further?
Skylar Davis, Brazoswood Softball

With all the star-power on the Lady Bucs' roster, one can imagine it must be difficult for the team to choose their “Warrior of the Game”.
Nonetheless, Brazoswood’s Skylar Davis put on a commendable performance in Game 1 of the Bi-District round against Shadow Creek.
In a game which the Lady Bucs won 4-1, Davis contributed hitting a 3-run homer, with another hit to top it off. Thus, making her the clear choice as the team’s “Warrior” in their 2023 playoff debut.
