Last season, the Lady Jackrabbits had an incredible year. With a 42-4 overall record and a 12-0 undefeated district record, the team showed tremendous talent on the court. Dropping only 18 out of 129 total sets on the season, Forney was amped up throughout the entire season. "The season was really good last year," said outside hitter and UMHB commit Mia Santos. "We had a really solid team and I think we all got along very well. It was a good group of girls to play with."
With clear chemistry on the court, Forney defeated plenty of opponents such as Carthage, Beckville, Lindale, and Lewisville in non-district play. Through their undefeated district run that saw the Lady Jackrabbits finish as district champions, the team also downed the likes of Corsicana, Red Oak, Ennis, Crandall, and more. Going three rounds deep in the playoffs, Forney took out Greenville and Texarkana before eventually falling in a hard-fought match against Lucas Lovejoy. "The bond on the team was really close, on and off the court," said libero Sam Wojtowicz. "That helped us communicate and work a lot better as a team."
"A strong court presence and being willing to bring energy to every game really gave us an advantage," added middle hitter Izzi Shemberger. "We were able to get out of holes and encourage each other through every moment," Shemberger said.
LOOKING AHEAD
This season, the team looks strong as they take on non-district opponents. With a six-win start to their season, Forney has already defeated Mesquite Horn, Denton Braswell, Rowlett, and more with their most recent victory coming in a 2-0 defeat over Fort Worth North Side. With unfinished business and a drive to get further into playoffs this season, the team is ready to do whatever it takes to defeat anyone that gets in their way. Under the careful guidance of head coach Michelle Eitel, the team definitely has what it takes to pursue and achieve their goals in the 2023-24 season.
"I'd like to make it further than round three," said outside hitter Kylie Rodriguez in regard to the team goals. "We want to make it a memorable season and have as much fun as we can," added Santos. With five more non-district games leading to district play, the team has every opportunity to continue fine-tuning their skills on and off the court. Opening district play at home against Red Oak on September 8th will be one of the many opportunities this squad has to show off their abilities this season.
