MLB DRAFT: Madden, Cowser to add more history to 2018 Cy Ranch squad
HOUSTON - No matter the competition, be it rock-paper-scissors, lifting weights, or a cross-fit challenge-type course, which included who could flip a monster truck tire the fastest in 15 yards; Colton Cowser and Ty Madden would go at it in high school.
"It was a best-of-three competition and the way they got after it you couldn't tell if it was Game 7 of the World Series or just a competition day in the fall," Cypress Ranch coach Corey Cephus said. "They're such good friends that they try and out-compete each other, outwork each other. It helps each of them get better. They love to compete."
That competitive spirit of the former Cy Ranch Mustangs has carried into the college level, Madden excelling at Texas, helping lead the Longhorns to the College World Series this spring, and Cowser at Sam Houston, and now it will head to the next level come Sunday.
Madden and Cowser are the projected No. 9 and No. 10 overall prospects in the 2021 MLB Draft and in the latest MLB Mock Draft, Madden is projected to be a Top 10 pick going No. 8 overall to the Angels.
"He was an exceptional high school pitcher and he just continued to improve," Cephus said. "The things he didn't like in high school he worked at it. He was inconsistent at strike-throwing and got better at it, his secondary pitches, he got better at it. His mentality on the mound of I'm going to be a force, he just continued to improve."
The 2019 Cy Ranch grad started 18 games for the Longhorns this spring posting a 2.45 ERA with a 1.05 WHIP and striking out 137 batters in 113 2/3 innings. Opponents batted .188 against him.
To get to those kinds of numbers, Madden had to work at it and that strong work ethic derives from those 6 a.m. workouts at Cy Ranch High School.
"There's so many Ty Madden stories," Cephus said with a chuckle. "The thing that sticks out to me the most is we used to have 6 a.m. workouts and once we stopped that he continued to come into the weight room on his own and workout at 6 a.m. As coaches, we walk in early and we saw him getting after it. That to me is the quintessential Ty Madden story, he's always going to find a way to outwork somebody."
After Cy Ranch, Cowser has formed a great career at Sam Houston playing for the Bearkats.
In 2019, he became the only Bearkat to ever play for the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team and earned MVP in the series against Cuba that year hitting .438 in six games.
Cowser is now projected to go No. 15 overall to the Brewers, which would make him the highest drafted player ever from Sam Houston passing Glenn Wilson, who was taken No. 18 in the 1980 draft.
"I was trying to tell scouts a few years ago with Cowser, you can either pay him a little bit now or you're going to pay him a lot in a few years," Cephus said. "They chose to pay him a lot come Sunday."
What makes these two selections from Cy Ranch is that they come from the 2018 team, which now after Sunday will boast not just two but five MLB Draft picks - JJ Goss (Tampa Bay Rays - 2019), Matthew Thompson (Chicago White Sox - 2019), Jared Alvarez-Lopez (San Diego Padres - 2019), Cowser (2021-TBD) and Madden (2021-TBD).
"We knew we were talented and that was one of the things going in, we weren't sneaking up on anybody," Cephus said about if he knew he had MLB talent in 2018. "Everybody had us circled and knew when they were going to play Cypress Ranch.
"Not only are they good ball players but they are great young men also and that's a credit to their families."
Cy Ranch is one of those Houston-area programs that has always been known for its baseball prowess.
From winning state championships in 2012 and 2015, a state semifinalist finish in 2018 and now a list of MLB Draft picks that continues to grow, which Cephus credits to what he calls a "hot-bed" of baseball talent.
"This area a hot-bed for talent and baseball knowledge," Cephus said. "We benefit from that. This area is one of the hot-bed areas for talent in America and really in the world."
FEATURE: Winn's name called by St. Louis Cardinals with 54th overall pick in 2020 MLB Draft
HOUSTON - Tiffany Rawson placed her right hand on her son's elbow as the pick was being announced.
Sitting around a metal patio table with friends and family at their home in Kingwood, Masyn Winn couldn't help but smile ear-to-ear because he knew his life was about to change.
"With the 54th pick the St. Louis Cardinals Masyn Winn."
Rawson yelled out "Yes!" as the cheers from the group around WInn drowned out the draft broadcast. Winn stood up and hugged his longtime friend and high school teammate Nick Luckett and then one after another hugs were exchanged. Happy tears were shed on this hot Texas afternoon.
Winn's childhood dream just became a reality.
"It was fantastic with everybody here," Winn said. "Just hearing my name everybody's face lit up, me and my mom started crying, it was just a great feeling."

Winn and his mother embraced a few more times as the celebration carried on.
The family rewound the television broadcast on the MLB Network to watch the announcement a second time. Rawson exclaimed a few times that - in the heart of Houston Astros country - they were Cardinals fans now as she continued to wipe away tears.
This moment is something Winn has been working towards since he was three-years-old and his mother has been there every step of the journey.
"She hugged me and said 'It's been a long road'," Winn said about the exchange between his mother and himself after he got drafted. "It really has. We've been dreaming of this since I was in elementary school. So, for it to finally happen, it's such a big deal and so huge for us. It was amazing.
"That hug meant everything."
One of the big questions around Winn heading into the draft is what would a team select him as.
He can be quick-handed shortstop with a powerful bat at the dish or a flame-throwing right-hander who's fastball can hit 98 mph on the radar gun before he break off an off-speed pitch that'll buckle your knees dropping into the strikezone at 77-80 miles per hour.
MLB Draft analysts considered him to be "one of the best two-way players in the draft".
Kingwood High School baseball coach Kelly Mead, who was on hand to watch Winn get drafted, has been telling every MLB scout that has called him the last six months exactly that.
"They've asked me what do you draft him as?," Mead said. "I think you draft him as both. They even said it on the broadcast that he's a legitimate two-way player. He's got things you can't teach. I really whole-heartily believe, not just because I've been around him for four years and have gotten to see the talent day-in and day-out, I think in four to five years he could be a household name. It would not surprise me if he's a guy that you're looking up at an All-Star game and winning the Home Run Derby or doing something special.
"He's that kind of talent, he's got that kind of drive."

For any high school player drafted by an MLB team, the biggest question that follows is will he go to college or decide to forego that and start his professional career.
Winn signed with the University of Arkansas earlier this spring. According to the Houston Chronicle, Winn will sign with Roc Nation and turn pro. According to the MLB Draft Tracker, Winn's slot value - 54th overall - is valued at $1.34 million.
So, next for Winn is the St. Louis Cardinals farm system.
"It means a lot, especially since I've gotten really close with their area scouts," Winn said. "I got coached by one of their scouts over the summer and we got real close. It's a very good feeling. I know I'm joining a family and I can't wait to get started."
