Newton Football looking for three-peat in 2019
The Newton Eagles are building a dynasty in southeast Texas and 2019 could bring another state title for the Eagles. It would be their third in a row to go along with their semi-final appearance in 2016.
The recent passing of head coach W.T. Johnson brings with it a heavy heart, but the boys will find solace as Johnson's son Drew with carry the head coach's torch moving forward.
Drew Johnson has been on Newton's coaching staff for the past eight seasons.
With a three year record of 43-1, the Eagles are reloading with new talent after losing 18 seniors to graduation, no small matter for a 3A school.
"We're excited coming into the season," said Johnson.
"Our fans can expect us to win every game we play. We've lost some good players and we've got some good players coming back. Having your kids believe in winning is half the battle."
On defense the Eagles will be led by five star DE James Sylvester (6-5, 235, 4.6) who will team with FS Zach Gulley (6-0, 185, 4.5) for a lethal front-end, back-end combination. Helping out in support will be top junior DE Dreshaun Spikes (6-1, 190, 4.6) and DB Robbie Phillips (5-9, 170, 4.6).
On offense, the Eagles will see changes all around as last years offensive coordinator Greg Neece takes Anahuac's head job and senior Nate Williams looks to be the Eagles QB. Fortifying the offense will be RB Valderian Fowler (807 yards, 10 TDs rushing) who will replace Darwin Barlow to graduation.
Fun Fact: Since 1975 the Newton Eagles have been coached by only two families, the Barbay's and the Johnson's. Curtis Barbay coached the Eagles from 1975 to 2010, winning two state titles. W.T. Johnson took over in 2011, left the program for a season in 2015, was replaced by Curtis Barbay's son Bryan Barbay, and then returned from 2016-2018. Brian Johnson continues the family traditions and with it the legacy of championships.
