VYPE 411: Mayde Creek's Rommell Williams
Rommell Williams recently won the Houston Boys Public School Basketball Player of the Year fan poll. VYPE caught up with Williams for the 411 on the star from Mayde Creek.
VYPE: How long have you been playing basketball and how did you get your start?
Williams: I've been playing basketball since the 3rd grade. I started with Houston Elite under Coach Cryer. One day, Coach Cryer called my Dad and told him to bring me out to the gym. That was the beginning.
VYPE: What is your favorite thing about basketball?
Williams: My favorite thing about basketball is building relationships with teammates—all working together in different roles towards a common goal.
VYPE: Go-to pregame meal? Routine?
Williams: I don't like to eat before games, but I do enjoy a couple of fruit snacks. My pre-game routine consists of listening to Lil Uzi Vert.
VYPE: Favorite subject in school?
Williams: My favorite subject in school is Environmental Science.
VYPE: Who's the toughest player you've ever faced on the court?
Williams: The toughest player that I have had to guard is Jaron Presley, who is currently attending St. Mary's University. He scored the ball from every level.
VYPE: Off the court, what is your favorite thing to do?
Williams: Off the court, I really enjoy watching Animal Planet. When I was younger, my dad would always watch it. So from there, I fell in love with it. Now, anything animal-related or focusing on animals, I am willing to explore.
VYPE: In all of your years playing basketball, what is the one memory from the game you'll never forget?
Williams: That's a tough question, one unforgettable moment for me. I can't recall the specific game, but I do remember that the game was close. My teammates, Sharman Carr and Isaiah Battee, came to me and told me that the ball should be in my hands and nobody else. It is a special confidence that you gain when you know that your teammates believe in you—that they trust you. It's a priceless feeling.
