Football's Back: San Antonio Is Ready For 12-5A DI & 14-5A DI Action
The 2020 VYPE San Antonio high school football season preview continues with area UIL team and district breakdowns. Today, we're going to take a look at UIL 12-5A Division I and UIL 14-5A Division I. Check out the team and district previews below and stay tuned for more area preseason coverage in the coming days.
UIL 12-5A Division I
This district looks very different from the past UIL realignment.Seguin is a returning member like Austin area programDripping Springs and will also take on new district opponents in Buda Johnson, Harlandale, Kyle Lehman, New Braunfels Canyon,San Antonio McCollum andSan Antonio Veterans Memorial.
San Antonio Veterans Memorial is off to a great start as a varsity football program, so expect it to remain a district favorite. The Patriots will lean on talents likeall-statecornerback Simeon Woodard, running back JC Solitaire, defensive lineman Seth Powell andkicker Camron Colwell.Seguin has also been a quality playoff participant in recent seasons and plans to stay on track with John Michael Mata,Marques Washington, Garrett Stiles, Tristan Moreno andDaniel Gonzalez.Another contender isNew Braunfels Canyon, who was battle-tested in itsUIL 26-6A home the past two seasons and has UTSA linebacker commit Caden Holt still leading the defensive unit.
Harlandale ISD is home to two loyal communities. Harlandale represented UIL 14-5A Division I as a bi-district finalist in 2019 and wants to stay in the mix withlinebacker Stephen Garza andrunning back Joe Anthony Vallejo. Its rival, San Antonio McCollum, expects to top its winless campaign from a year ago because it has an offense made up byslot receiver Luciano Alvarado, running back Isaiah Leffler andoffensive lineman Ceasar Alcocer and a defense that consists ofsafety Christian Ramirez andlinebackers Fabian Torresand Ethan Sosa.
UIL 14-5A Division I
The UIL planned road trips for San Antonio Southwest,San Antonio Southside and Von Ormy Southwest Legacy. The Dragons,Cardinals and Titans will travel toEagle Pass Winn, Laredo Cigarroa, Laredo Martin and Rio Grande City in one of the next two seasons. San Antonio Southwest is two years removed from the UIL 14-5A Division I championship and has notable players back inAndre Mitchell, Lloyd Young, Angel Narvaez, Roman Ramirez, Chris Smith, Jaidyn Birts, Oscar Jimenez, Trey Cano andJP Zuniga-Rodriguezto chase down the crown again.

San Antonio Southside is also in the mix for this year's district title. Even though it makes the jump from UIL 15-5A Division II, it has all-staterecruits inMicah Young and Caleb Camarillo, plus a quarterback inRichard Torres on the same offensive side as Matthew Geigenmiller, Angel De La Garza,Chris Lujan, Jose Reyes and Michael Tamayo. The Cardinals also have a loaded defense that featuresJonathan Rivas, Michael Salinas, Jeremiah Hall, Nikolai Hernandez, Cody Wilkerson and Matthew Reyes.

And Von Ormy Southwest Legacy has a bright future. Itexpects to lean onZezar Tovar,Homer Flores, Jorge Pineda,Javier Lira, Zach Luna,Naythan Pena, Raymond Wilcox, Xzavier Morales, Michael Arteaga, Juan Zamora, Gerardo Abrego,Javier Murillo andIsaiah Ulibarri.
