A Multi-Sport Lacrosse Star, Cylan Terrelonge
For the most part, student-athletes take on one sport, but for Cylan Terrelonge that's not the case. Terrelonge plays both football and lacrosse. His journey as a multi-sport student-athlete has had its up and downs, but nevertheless, he has had a tremendous career in sports. Cylan is a senior at Horn High School and plays for Bridge Lacrosse in Dallas, Texas. He has been a part of several teams such as the Bridge Eagles, St.Philips Saints, Barack Obama Male Leadership School, and Bridge Select.
Cylan has gained a multitude of opportunities through lacrosse when compared to the number of opportunities he has received through football. Because he plays two sports, he has come to a realization that he must let go of one or the other when he heads to college. Although he understands that football might be the sport he gives up, he doesn't discredit the coaches and people who have supported him through his football journey. Football has given him a higher lacrosse IQ because often lacrosse overlaps with multiple sports, so what may be useful in a lacrosse game might be useful in football and vice-versa.

Moving away from the realizations Terrelonge has come to, VYPE-U takes a look at the accolades and accomplishments Cylan has achieved on the field. According to Cylan, his biggest accomplishment is that he's comfortable in his own skin. " I think my greatest accomplishment has been being comfortable with the fact that I am an African-American athlete who plays something that's not usual for my culture. Being comfortable telling people about me and teaching them more about it is important to me because I really kept it to myself sophomore and freshmen year. Also, branching out really shows my growth and it helped me, which probably my best accomplishment currently," Said Cylan. Being a person of color comes with many obstacles and comes with experiencing microaggressions on the field, but Cylan has grown and hasn't allowed that to stop him from being himself.
Let's take a look at a specific clip from his highlight reel.
At 1:07 he is faced with an attacker going east to west. Cylan is stuck on the attacker all the way through until he checks the attackers' stick, causing the ball to fall out of his stick. For a few seconds, four guys are battling for the ground ball; at some point, it even ends up being tossed up in the air. Because of Cylans meticulous defensive work, he caused a needed turnover for his team. This emphasizes the footwork skills Cylan has and what he does with them on the field.
In the future, Cylan hopes to obtain a bachelor's degree in petroleum or electrical engineering, have a home and a family, and become a professional lacrosse athlete for the Premier Lacrosse League. We wish Cylan all the best of luck in his lacrosse career, and in life.
VYPE-U: The Impact of Lacrosse on Katelyn Sclafani
VYPE U takes a look into Katelyn Sclafani's lacrosse career, how she has been impacted by the sport and what the secret to being a successful student-athlete is.
Lacrosse is quickly becoming one of the fastest growing sports. Katelyn Sclafani, a junior at Southlake Carroll Senior High School, plays lacrosse for GRIT Dallas and Southlake. Sclafani has been playing lacrosse for ten years. She is an attacker who has sensational dodging skills, footwork, stick skills and speed.
All of these elements led to her noteworthy goal during the Steps 2022 vs GRIT Dallas game. Let's take a look at that highlight: Sclafani starts off at X, which is behind the net, and receives the ball from her teammate. She remains vigilant of any cutters or any open players so she can proceed to pass the ball, but she soon realizes that she has the perfect opportunity to score a goal. Sclafani initiates a couple of jab & stutter steps in order to confuse her defender. Because of these movements, her defender leaves just enough space for Katelyn to execute a perfect roll around the crease into a question mark dodge and score with just one minute left in the first half. Not only does this yield a goal but it showcases the level of perfection Katelyn's skills have reached.
As any student-athlete knows, sports become a huge part of an athlete's life. For Katelyn, it has taught her so many life lessons and the importance of working hard.
"Lacrosse has taught me the importance of loyalty and standing up for what you believe in. Through lacrosse I have discovered the importance of having a family-focused culture and always supporting my teammates. Lacrosse has also taught me to never ever take anything for granted because you never know what could happen," said Sclafani.
Through any sport we always like to find a way to influence, in a positive way, the younger generation and we like to become a role model for them. The next group of lacrosse players will make a big impact in the lacrosse world, just as Katelyn has done and will continue to do so. When asked what piece of advice Sclafani would give a younger lacrosse player, she said:
"One piece of advice I would give a younger lacrosse player would be to have fun. Enjoy every moment you get to spend on the lacrosse field and create strong friendships with your teammates because those are the people that will support you the most."
Sclafani has recently committed to play D1 lacrosse at East Carolina University in North Carolina as a Junior.
VYPE-U wishes her all the success in the world.
