The Importance of Recovery for Athletes (with Q&A) Presented By Yoga Athletex
Star Volleyball players Logan Lednicky (George Ranch) and Trinity Watts (Liberty University) recently tested their verticals with us when we were able to re-open again due to the pandemic. Both girls have been training with us for over 5 years, through our group strength + conditioning and yoga classes and private training.
Both girls play volleyball and unfortunately, their season got cut short in March, leaving them to "rest" for over 2 months. The funny thing is when they came in, both claimed to not have been training like normal and were worried of testing low. When they least expected it, they both set NEW PRs! We all stopped and looked again, re-tested, and re-measured just to make sure because of the huge increase in their vertical, both adding 2-3 inches to their last testing. As soon as we confirmed their new verticals, we knew exactly why this happened. They rested. They allowed their bodies to truly recover through our yoga classes.
Volleyball seasons are long and hard on the body. There are no scheduled rest days for months at a time. It is a fun and competitive sport, but it is tough on the body, especially youth female athletes, who are growing and need rest. Recovery is something so important for performance and growth and is often overlooked and left out of training programs. These girls rested and recovered through yoga, and it showed. Rest does not mean being lazy. It means allowing your body to recover each week even through various recovery techniques, to allow the body to come back stronger. We have been saying this for years. LET YOUR BODY RECOVER and you will be a better athlete. The key is making sure you are training hard, but still taking time to recover each week.
At Yoga Athletex, one of our 3 pillars of performance, is RESTORE. We encourage resting and recovery through various training modalities. Rest to us, means you are taking care of your body to come back stronger the next day through techniques we offer such as yoga for athletes, performance breath-work and sports meditation.
Logan touched 10'4.5" and Trinity touched 10" both setting new PR's and making us all so proud! These girls deserve the world through their perseverance, dedication & determination and I cannot tell you how happy I am they were forced to rest to really understand the benefits of it. Being an athlete to most people, means training every single day. That is the case, but there are so many modalities of training that are available and needed. Training your body and training your mind are equally important. Training through yoga, breath-work, and meditation is a great place to start.Train with us In studio, Livestream or On demand! Q&A WITH LOGAN LEDNICKY
Yoga Athletex: How long have you been practicing/training at Yoga Athletex?
Lednicky: I have been training at Yoga Athletex for a little over a year. I started coming YAX to increase my vertical but by taking the other yoga mobility classes it has helped me get faster on the court, become more flexible and improve my form.
Yoga Athletex: What benefits have you received since training at Yoga Athletex?
Lednicky: I have increased my vertical at least 4 inches, gotten rid of old knee problems, and increased my endurance.
Yoga Athletex: What is your sport/activity outside of the studio?
Lednicky: I play volleyball.
Yoga Athletex: What is your favorite class at Yoga Athletex and why?
Lednicky: My favorite class is jump training because it targets volleyball specifically. I have gotten so much better at using my power in to jump up rather than out which has helped my on the court when facing big blockers.
Yoga Athletex: Any advice for new people trying out the studio?
Lednicky: At first the classes will seem really hard but don't stop! Just keep going as much as you can and it will get easier over time, and once that happens you can push yourself in the workouts even harder. I started coming YAX to increase my vertical but by taking the other yoga and mobility classes, I have gotten faster on court, increased my flexibility and improved my form.
Yoga for Volleyball Athletes Presented By Yoga Athletex
Volleyball in my opinion is one of the best and most exciting sports! I grew up playing volleyball and always remember having a volleyball in my hand, I think I even took it to bed with me when I was little. My mom who played in college at UH (was a total stud) had a huge influence on my love for the sport. It was a big goal of mine to play in college, so I played club volleyball from 5th grade to Senior year of high school to try to make that dream come true.
I suffered from some injuries throughout high school and college but always kept pushing to continue to play until I couldn't play any longer. My dream to play in college came true but it got cut short due to a back injury. Insert yoga. I went to an orthopedic for my back and he suggested yoga, like all doctors do. I took him up on it and started practicing and soon found my second passion in life. The benefits of yoga allowed me to continue playing volleyball without pain, which I didn't think was possible.
While volleyball is an amazing sport and creates amazing relationships, it's very demanding on the body and mind. To become an amazing volleyball player, you have to practice every day. With practicing every day comes a lot of repetitive motion. Repetitive motion of any kind, for any sport, has a tendency to create injury, if proper rest and recovery measures are not in your training program. Our online portal of yoga classes has exactly what you need to implement recovery in your training, today! You can practice yoga whenever you want, wherever you are.
After practicing yoga for 4 years, I decided I needed to teach it. Not just teach it to anyone, but specifically teach it to athletes who play volleyball. I wish I would have had it when I was younger, because I would have had less injuries. Yoga is a great recovery tool to have in your tool box and I believe every volleyball player needs it to be the best they can be.
Yoga is a series of stretches and movements that allow your body to gain flexibility, increase range of motion and calm your nervous system. The key benefit here is the ability to increase range of motion. Studies have shown that limitations in range of motion for athletes can cause injury and hinder your ability to jump higher. Small steps like starting with a 20 minute yoga sequence once or twice a week, can show major benefits.
My favorite thing about yoga for athletes is that it allows our bodies to recover and give our bodies relief, so we can go back the next day to practice feeling great. If you incorporate small steps of adding yoga into your everyday life as an athlete, you will see a reduction in injury, less pain, more mental focus and clarity, ability to get lower to the ground, stronger core strength and limitless potential.
Volleyball players suffer from tight hamstrings, rounded shoulders (because well, that's our ready position) which causes a lack of mobility in our thoracic spine and low back pain. Front row hitters have a lot of shoulder issues from the repetitive motion of hitting and using torque and force with your body to hit a ball. All of the problems and issues that volleyball players face can be reduced with a proper yoga sequence. This is why I created these classes specifically for you, to do anywhere!
Yoga is linking the body to the breath, so essentially, if you are just moving dynamically, stretching and breathing, you are practicing yoga. I created yoga for volleyball players to get very specific to your needs as a volleyball athlete. I put my two big passions in life together and have created an outlet for athletes to move in other ways besides what their sport requires.
After volleyball ended for me, having a movement outlet that was very low impact was of utmost importance to me, because it was the only thing my body could handle at that time. Because of yoga, I have been able to get back into playing sand volleyball, HIIT workouts, pool workouts, and strength training. It is because of the breathwork in my yoga practice that I was able to overcome any hard times, surgeries, and stress.
I am so excited to invite you into the world of yoga for volleyball athletes and I encourage you to see what it can do for YOU! Please check it out for yourself and watch the classes that are specific to your position (Middle, Setter, DS/Libero, or RS/OS). I want to see you play volleyball for as long as you want! See you in the library soon!
Namaste, Y'all.
