The Wrap: Westfield impresses to win VYPE Holiday Invitational presented by Whataburger
HOUSTON - Westfield went through the gauntlet.
The Mustangs were tested every step of the way in the 2021 VYPE Holiday Invitational presented by Whataburger. Westfield, which improved to 15-1 overall on the season, had to battle through Fort Bend Elkins, The Woodlands Christian Academy and finally Atascocita to win the two-day tournament.
"It's sweet," Westfield coach Bill Goffney said. "It's a testament to my guys. We played Atascocita early in the season and they got us at their place. It was personal, that was our only loss of the season, so we needed to avenge that, so the guys came out with a little more fire and intensity.
"It's big-time momentum. We just looked at the bracket and I told them it's a great week when you can knock down two Top 10 teams in a couple days stretch. So, that propels us into district."
Sophomore Zion Pipkin scored nine and senior Willie Williams poured in 10 points in the win for Westfield. Pipkin was named the VYPE Holiday Invitational MVP, while Williams was named to the All-Tournament team.
"I'm excited about this team," Pipkin said. "We play hard. We're scrappy on defense. We get out there and run. This was a big game because they had beat us before."

AT THE RIM: No. 4 Westfield looking for deeper run in postseason
No. 4 Westfield Mustangs
Coach Billy Goffney blew through District 14-6A last season on the way to a Coach of the Year Award as the Mustangs went 23-4 on the season.
However, Westfield fell in the second round of the postseason. It could serve as a building block to 2021-22. District co-MVP Willie Williams returns after tallying a double-double last season and second-teamers Blake Washington and Chris Tyler return in the backcourt. Mario Johnson earned an honorable mention for his points and rebounds in the paint.
Goffney welcomes another critical piece this season in Zion Pipkin from The Woodlands Christian Academy. Pipkin is just a sophomore but is projected as a college prospect at guard. He won a TAPPS 5A state title last season.
"We are looking for balanced scoring, great defense and good team chemistry to propel us deeper into the postseason," Goffney said.
