HOUSTON – In her time at Cy Ranch, Riane Burton has been a part of a lot of good teams.
Last season, the Mustangs went 31-8 overall (15-1 in district play) and reached the third round of the playoffs. The year before that, the group won 29 games and made it to the third round.
Now, entering her senior year, Burton is hoping to recreate the magic that the 2016-2017 team, led by now National Champion Didi Richards, who stars at Baylor, did reaching the State Championship game that season.
Burton enters this year after averaging 15.5 points and 11 rebounds per game a year ago. Of Burton's 11 rebounds, 6.3 per game came on the defensive end of the court.
For her career, Burton enters her senior season averaging 12.1 points and 9.7 rebounds per game in 75 games played. Burton sits 93 points away from 1,000 for her career and is 276 rebounds away from 1,000 boards as well.
With the numbers she puts up, Burton should be come a member of the 1,000-1,000 club this season.
VYPE caught up with Burton recently for a few questions.
VYPE: Over the summer you committed to Cincinnati, what went into that decision?
Burton: "When I was deciding I focused more on my relationship with the coaching staff more than anything since those would be the people I would be under for the next four years. After looking at my relationships with the staff next it was the environment on campus itself, I was comfortable and it just felt like home."
VYPE: Having gone through the recruiting process, what's your advice to younger players?
Burton: "I would say that you have to make sure you keep in contact with coaches, that's the most important thing during the process. Make sure you reach out to them as much as they reach out to you, because those relationships matter."
VYPE: It is your senior year, what are your biggest goals?
Burton: "My biggest goals are to be league MVP and get my team as far as possible in our playoff run."
VYPE: What do you hope people remember the most about you at Cy Ranch?
Burton: I hope people remember the passion I had for the game of basketball and how hard I worked to be the ideal student athlete. I also hope they remember how hard my teammates and I worked to keep the Cy Ranch Girl's Basketball tradition of excellence alive.
VYPE: What is your favorite part about playing basketball?
Burton: My favorite part about playing basketball is getting to experience so many new things. I've gotten the opportunity to meet lots of new people and go to different places while playing. Those experiences make me love and appreciate the game so much more.
