Jakoby Flores recently won the Houston Boys Private School Basketball Player of the Year fan poll. VYPE caught up with Flores for the 411 on the star from St. Thomas Episcopal.
VYPE: How long have you been playing basketball and how did you get your start?
Flores: I started at the age of 3, and my dad used to make me work on being able to dribble the ball with both hands.
VYPE: What is your favorite thing about basketball?
Flores: My favorite thing about basketball would have to be the competition. I'm a competitor and I will do anything it takes to win.
VYPE: Go-to pregame meal? Routine?
Flores: For school ball we would either eat Chick-fil-A or go to smoothie king. When I play on the UAA circuit during the summer we would always just get the hotel breakfast and keep a Gatorade with us at all times.
VYPE: Favorite subject in school?
Flores: Favorite subject in school would be English.
VYPE: Who's the toughest player you've ever faced on the court?
Flores: The people that know me know that I never give people credit unless they show me. There is one player that continues to progress at a rapid pace and that is Bryce Griggs. He has earned my respect the 3rd go around against each other.
VYPE: Off the court, what is your favorite thing to do?
Flores: Off the court I am either with my family, working out somewhere, or playing Call of Duty.
VYPE: In all of your years playing basketball, what is the one memory from the game you'll never forget?
Flores: Losing my first actual championship game. I hate losing more than I love winning, and when I lost my very first close game, it brought out another type of competitor in me. Ever since then, I have hated the feeling of losing and always do what I can to make sure my team and I can pull off win.
