After coming up just short last year, QB Isiah DeLeon will look to take the next step his Junior Year. New Braunfels looks to get on a winning track as well after a 4-4 record las season. The big question? Can San Marcos get a win over New Braunfels, something they haven't done since 1982.
Game 2: Westlake vs Temple
Time: Fri, 8/27 7:00 PM
Location: Wildcat Stadium (415 N 31st St., Temple, TX 76504)
Preview: The quest for the 3-peat and the chance to "ride off into the sunset" begins for Head Coach Riley Dodge. Westlake returns Clemson commit Cade Klubnik who threw for 3,495 yards and 35 touchdowns last season as well as he top target Junior WR Jaden Greathouse. The biggest question mark will be how the defense will look, having to replace 9 starters from last years squad. While most people may be looking ahead for Westlake, and rightfully so on paper, Temple also returns a loaded team from last that went 10-2 before losing 2 Rockwall-Heath in the second round of the playoffs. Four Star WR Mikal Harrison-Pilot and RB Samari Howard will be key if Temple hopes to get the upset win in Week 1.
Game 3: Reagan vs Brennan
Time: Fri, 8/27 7:00 PM
Location: Farris Stadium (8400 N Loop 1604 W., San Antonio, TX 78249)
Preview: This is the big game to watch in San Antonio this week. Both teams are ranked in our Top 10 in our ATX/SATX Football rankings, and both have high expectations for this year. Brennan returns dual threat QB Ashton Dubose who had a great 2020 campaign. Dubose threw for more than 2,000 yards and ran for more than 800 last season all while racking up an impressive 41 touchdowns. Not only will the Bears return Dubose but 13 other starters as well, making them the favorites in District 29-6A. But Reagan also return 14 starters including QB and RB duo Britton Moore and Carson Green. The Rattlers also seem poised to win District 28-6A. Both teams look ready to rule San Antonio Football this year so the Week 1 matchup will be bragging rights for the rest of the season.
Game 4: Vandegrift vs Cedar Park
Time: Fri, 8/27 7:00 PM
Location: Monroe Memorial Stadium (9500 McNeil Dr., Austin, TX 78750)
Preview: What is the biggest rivalry matchup Week 1 in the Austin area Cedar Park travels to Vandegrift to take on the Vipers. Former District rivals, the Timberwolves and Vipers have kept this rivalry going when Vandegrift moved to 6A. Cedar Park loses its star QB in Rider Hernandez with QB Josh Pell taking the reigns. They are also under first year Head Coach Michael Quintero who take over the reigns from Carl Abseck, the new Barbers Hill Head Coach. The Vipers must also replace their QB from last season and may have to lean on their defense early on in the season.
Game 5: Judson vs DeSoto
Time: Fri, 8/27 7:00 PM
Location: Rutledge Stadium (900 S Seguin Rd., Converse, TX 78109)
Preview: This is the second meeting between the 2 clubs all time with DeSoto getting the best of Judson last season 37-0. Each team is in rebuilds with DeSoto graduating some major talent from last seasons team while Judson starts the season with some inexperience on the offensive line. Judson will look to utilize Michael Burroughs and Anthony Evans on offense and lean on their defense to try and beat a still talented DeSoto squad.
