VYPE/ESPN Austin Central Texas Game of the Week Preview: East View vs. Georgetown
If Texas/OU have the “Red River Rivalry,” East View vs. Georgetown should be called the San Gabriel River Slugfest.”
Whatever you want to call it, this year’s East View/Georgetown showdown will be dripping with playoff implications when they clash at Birkelbach Field in Georgetown in the VYPE Central Texas High School Football Game of the Week this Friday night (10/18). Due to the Major League Baseball playoffs, our VYPE broadcast will not be simulcast live, but will be replayed at 6:00 Saturday on 102.7 FM ESPN Austin radio.
Perennial playoff power Georgetown has historically had the edge. Coach Chuck Griffin’s Eagles (2-1 in 8-5A-1, 5-1 overall) have so far allowed just 15 points-per-game. That, combined with the accurate arm of sophomore quarterback Kaden Mcdougle (69-111, 1,052 yards, 17 TD, 1 INT) and the aptly named junior workhorse back Jett Walker (92-1028, 11.2 YPC) have led them to the cusp of a playoff berth. The Eagles enter the showdown with their crosstown rival tied with Lake Belton for third, a game behind both Cedar Park and Leander, the latter of which sent Georgetown to their only defeat of the year.
Lurking just off the pace is East View. Coach Michael Wall’s resurgent Patriots (1-2, 3-3) sit tied with Rouse one game back of Georgetown and Lake Belton – but could very easily be 5-1 or even 6-0 on the season, having lost their three games by a total of just 11 points. The Patriots will need another solid game by senior dual threat quarterback Ty Blair (129-201, 1626 yards, 17 TD, 4 INT passing; 66-442, 6.7 YPC rushing) to propel them past the Eagles and scramble the 8-5A-1 playoff race.
Half of Georgetown, TX supports Eagles blue; the other half bleeds Patriots red. It’s time to kick off the San Gabriel River Slugfest!
