Lake Belton broke up a 21-all tie early in the fourth quarter and stopped Cedar Park on downs at the Bronco 4-yard line to swipe a clutch 28-21 victory from Tigers Stadium in Belton Friday night (10/25) in the VYPE Central Texas High School Football Game of the Week on 102.7 FM ESPN Austin radio.
The teams traded touchdowns in an eventful first half. Lake Belton scored first on a 28-yard pass from Eli Mascarenas to Zion Harness before Cedar Park answered with a David Cooper to Noah Wallace 20-yard touchdown toss.
With the Broncos platooning at quarterback, Maverick Maddux tossed a 16-yard pass to Davion Peters before the Timberwolves answered again. This time it was an 85-yard Cooper to Jamal Porter to tie it up again at 14-14.
Peters punched it in from 10 yards out for Lake Belton, but Cedar Park’s Trae Hill reached the End Zone late in the half to send the teams in to locker room knotted up at 21-21.
After a scoreless third quarter, Mascarenas capped a Bronco scoring drive with a 5-yard run that proved to be the winning score. Cedar Park mounted one last drive but came up empty on fourth down, turning it over to the Broncos at their own 4-yard line. Lake Belton ran out the clock to secure the huge win.
Senior quarterback Eli Mascarenas (7-7, 103 yds., TD, rushing TD) and junior Maverick Maddux (8-12, 152 yds., TD) split time under center for the Broncos. Cooper (11-19, 176 yds., 2 TDs.; 10-70 rushing) paced the Cedar Park attack.
Lake Belton’s win lifted the Broncos (4-1, 6-2) into a three-way tie with Cedar Park (4-1, 5-3) and Georgetown atop a tightly packed District 8-5A-1. The Broncos face Georgetown Friday (11/1) while Cedar Park, after facing Rouse Thursday, clashes with the Eagles the following Friday. You can watch both Cedar Park games on VYPE.
All three teams are a game up on Rouse and Leander while East View, two games back, remains in the playoff hunt with games vs. the Raiders and the Lions in the final two weeks.
