Anderson and McCallum open the high school football season every year with the Taco Shack Bowl from venerable House Park. When their baseball teams follow suit this week, it will mean even more. With Anderson’s return to 5A, they’ll meet as district foes when they face off for a crucial District 24-5A showdown in this week’s VYPE Series Spotlight.
Anderson won 20 games last season, yet didn’t make the playoffs in an absolutely loaded District 26-6A. It’s no surprise Coach Kenny Matthews’ Trojans have cruised thus far to a 6-0 district mark in 24-5A and 13-5 overall. That’s despite having just two senior starters back from last year’s squad (pitcher/infielder Ben Waisman and outfielder Gus Begert).
McCallum enters this series as the defending district champions following a 20-12 mark in 2024 that saw them go 13-1 in the district. Similar to their rival, the Knights only have three starters back from last year’s playoff squad, including just one senior, the versatile CJ Willie. After struggling early, Coach Trey Honeycutt’s Knights have reeled off 6-straight district wins and have surged to a 10-8-1 overall record.
Not to overlook Bastrop (4-0 in the district), but a sweep by either squad will make them the clear favorite to capture the district title. (Should they finish tied atop the standings, it appears likely they’d be split into different divisions, precluding the need for a tiebreaker.)
Game 1 will be tomorrow (4/1) from venerable Nelson Field before the series moves to the funky Northwest Pony Field on Friday (4/4). VYPE Live will broadcast both games, courtesy of the Anderson Baseball Booster Club.
