As April winds down, so does the UIL softball regular season—and the road to Red & Charline McCombs Field in Austin is officially underway.
With the revamped playoff format in place, teams will soon split into divisions and begin their postseason journey.
In the San Antonio area, several programs look more than capable of making a serious push toward State in the coming weeks.
Leading the way are the O’Connor Panthers, who closed the regular season on a 12-game win streak and now carry a strong 19-2 record into the postseason. Right behind them in District 28-6A is Harlan (19-4), another dangerous squad capable of a deep playoff run.
In Class 5A, Smithson Valley has been dominant all year, going unbeaten in District 26-5A to post an impressive 18-1 mark. SA Veterans Memorial (18-3) also remains firmly in the mix after a strong regular season showing.
Out of Class 4A, Davenport (19-7-1) continues to build on its reputation as a regional powerhouse, while 6A contenders like East Central, Johnson, Taft, and Cibolo Steele have also put together solid campaigns.
With district titles now settled and playoff brackets on the horizon, San Antonio’s top teams are shifting their focus to the most important stretch of the spring—where history is decided.

As April winds down, so does the UIL softball regular season—and the road to Red & Charline McCombs Field in Austin is about to begin.
With a revamped playoff format in place, teams will soon split into divisions and begin their postseason push. And across the Dallas-Fort Worth area, several programs look poised to make a serious run toward the State Tournament.
Leading the pack are the undefeated Melissa Cardinals, entering the playoffs with a flawless 27-0 record. Under head coach Cassie Crabtree, the defending state champions are aiming to make it back-to-back titles this May.
Denton Guyer (20-3) is no stranger to postseason success, having reached the State Tournament in each of the last two seasons. Forney (25-1-1) is also building momentum, hoping to return to the big stage for the first time since 2019—when the program still competed in Class 5A.
Also among the top contenders are Aledo and Birdville, both making strong cases in 5A, while 4A powerhouse Brock remains unbeaten at 25-0-2.
In Class 6A, Keller, Flower Mound, Hebron, and Mansfield Legacy all deserve attention, as each program has shown flashes of postseason potential.
With talent spread across every classification, the DFW area is primed for a thrilling playoff run. The next few weeks should go a long way in determining which teams truly stand among the state’s elite.
