Play the word association game with Liberty Hill Football and you’re automatically going to respond “Slot-T” or “running game.” All true, but it was Liberty Hill’s defense and special teams that put the Panthers over the top in a 58-37 win Friday (9/6) over their next-door neighbors from Rouse in our VYPE Central Texas High School Football Game of the Week.
In the business-as-usual department, senior running back Kyle May rambled for 142 yards and four touchdowns on 23 carries to pace a Panther offense that was missing jack-of-all-trades quarterback Jack Pitchford. Stable mates Dj Seaborn (10-97, TD) and Bryce Muchaw (13-98) barely missed the century mark themselves.
Rouse junior quarterback London Montgomery (24-45, 392 yards, 4 TD, 2 INT) had a big night for the Raiders, but Liberty Hill’s defense made the plays when they had to. The Panthers notched five tackles-for-loss and, aside from an 88-yard run from junior Anthony Reyes, otherwise held the Raiders to 20 yards rushing.
Kaden Cockburn nabbed a pick-6 and returned Alister Vallejo’s blocked field goal for touchdowns while Vallejo’s blocked extra point attempt and senior Evan Jones’ interception were also among the defensive and special teams highlights.
Liberty Hill (1-1) heads to Midland Christian High School Friday night for a neutral site matchup with El Paso Eastlake in their final non-district tilt of the season; Rouse (1-1) heads to Waco to take on Midway.
