New Braunfels junior quarterback Peyton Driggers is in the middle of his first full season on varsity. He first got on the football field at the young age of eight years old and hasn't stopped since. However, his love for playing quarterback wasn't fully discovered until he reached 11 years old and was playing on local teams. Ever since then, he has been focused on leading various football teams at QB.
Driggers didn't start playing varsity until the last three games of his sophomore year, so he didn't really get a feel for the high school game until this season. Being on varsity has helped him grow as an athlete on and off the field. The nerves from sophomore year are gone and he has more trust in himself.
"Last year, I pretty much did whatever the coach told me and went with that," said Driggers. "But this year, I can read defenses and, if something is off with the play, I can change out of it. I have more confidence this year and what our team can do."
Driggers is focused on becoming a strong leader for the team and has really seen an improvement with the chemistry on the team compared to last season. This year, it is easier to get everyone to work together and Driggers is focused on what he can do for the team. That has paid off because the Unicorns (4-3, 1-3) won their first four games in 2019 and are in the thick of the UIL 26-6A playoff race with three games left in the regular season.
"That's what you have to do as a quarterback," he said. " Keep your team in the game and keep fighting."
As Driggers rises through his junior season and into his senior season, he hopes to start getting in contact with colleges. Being a quarterback comes with a lot of hard work, but Driggers is determined to transform and grow his image through the public eye of New Braunfels.
"Last year, people kind of just looked at me as just an athlete," said Driggers. "I wasn't really a quarterback last year or the year before, but I have been going through QB training. I turned into more of a quarterback and less of just an athlete, so that has helped me with my team."
