Former Colleyville Heritage stand-out, Sophie Leathers, helps lead Arkansas State XC to third-straight SBC Championship
A couple of former Dallas-Fort Worth area cross country athletes shined on Friday morning as Arkansas State swept the Sun Belt Cross Country Championship Meet. The win marks Arkansas State women's cross country team's third consecutive SBC Championship and the men's win marks the first time Arkansas State has won both women's and men's titles in a decade. Two runners from the women's team are known in the DFW area:
Sophie Leathers - Colleyville Heritage Alumna
Leathers finished third overall on Friday morning with a time of 17:38.1 at the Sun Belt championship meet. Finishing third in the race is only the latest accomplishment that Leathers has had with her running career. So far, Leathers has had an outstanding collegiate career where she has posted a 17:37.0 personal best in the 5K and a 21:46.9 personal best in the 6K.
Leathers had a great high school career with Colleyville Heritage where she helped lead the team to their first-ever UIL State Championship appearance during her senior season. Leathers was also a strong track runner for the Panthers and continues to run track at Arizona State.
Sarah Trammel - Burleson Centennial Alumna
Trammel finished 17th overall on Friday to help secure Arkansas State's championship win. Trammel has also posted a great collegiate career so far with an 18:26.2 personal best in the 5K as well as a 22:56.1 personal best in the 6K.
Trammel had an excellent high school career where she finished fourth at state in 2018. During the 2019 track season, Trammel competed in the UIL State Championship meet. Trammel also runs track for Arkansas State.
