3-0 New Braunfels Ready To Challenge For Playoff Spot After Comeback Against Johnson

Watch out 26-6A! New Braunfels has quietly become one of the state's 3-0 teams. The Unicorns upset 2018 playoff teams Alamo Heights and Seguin in the first two weeks of the 2019 Texas high school football season before finishing a perfect non-district slate with a come-from-behind 28-21 win against another 2018 postseason participant in San Antonio Johnson (1-2) at Unicorn Stadium on Friday night.

VYPE Player of the Game Peyton Driggers scored New Braunfels' last two touchdowns, as the Unicorns erased a 21-7 halftime deficit and took their only lead of the game at the 2:06 mark of the fourth quarter.

"Amazing, amazing," said an excited Driggers after the game. "We prepared good, we executed after the first half, and that's all we can do."

New Braunfels also got a pair of touchdowns from Ryker Purdy. His first quarter score matched Justin Rodriguez's touchdown run, and his third period score cut into a 21-14 San Antonio Johnson lead that was built by Rodriguez's touchdown reception and Shane Johnson's score.

The Unicorns' offense will get a lot of credit for Friday's win because of the 21-0 second half scoring edge, but the defense also forced a trio of fourth down stops during the same period. The team is confident for a tough 26-6A slate that already features two 3-0 opponents and three 2-1 foes, but also got a wake-up call in the form of its first and second half turnovers on Friday. If it cleans up that part of its gameplay, it can make a run at its first postseason appearance since the 2016 season.

"They're [an] amazing team," Driggers said of San Antonio Johnson. "We prepared well and we're ready for district."
