This probably should have been published yesterday, but better late than never, right? Each week, on top of the bigger DFW football breakdowns that will be published, we'll predict 24 notable games based on highly scientific research methodologies.
Or off gut instinct. Or flip a coin. Throw darts a board. Whatever strikes our fancy is how we'll handle this.
But since we missed yesterday's notable games - listed here - we'll only have 20 this week, which includes the longer breakdown predictions. And for full disclosure, the four teams that won in our list from Thursday - Flower Mound (over Keller Fossil Ridge); Arlington Bowie (over Flower Mound Marcus); McKinney Boyd (over Garland Naaman Forest); Prestonwood Christian (over Wylie) - would have been totally picked to win beforehand. Scouts honor.
All jokes aside, here are this week's projects. And including Thursday's matchup between Plano West and Frisco Reedy, we're off to a good start at 1-0.
Cedar Hill @ Allen Allen has depth unrivaled in Texas high school football, but Cedar Hill has a lot more returning talent from last year. Should be a good game to open the season with the final score being closer than might be expected in Allen's favor.
▲ Argyle @ Stephenville Argyle is a 4A powerhouse across all sports, starting with its football program. These are two solid teams in 4A Division I, so expect a knock-down-drag-em-out type of game with Argyle coming out on top.
▲ Coppell @ Garland Sachse Sachse is reloaded this year and ready to make another run at a district crown while Coppell will have some things to figure out early in the year. Give us Sachse.
▲ Denton Guyer @ Aledo A rematch of last year's contest where Aledo won in Denton 40-0. Don't quite expect to see such a lopsided score, but Aledo should still come out on top - reigning 5A champs and all.
▲ Dallas Jesuit @ Arlington A new quarterback for Arlington with Jahari Rogers moving to the secondary for his senior year, but expect a stacked Arlington squad to hold serve at home.
▲ Odessa Permain @ DeSoto Having gone into Permian last year and won by 10, expect DeSoto, with Claude Mathis back, to win another close game against Permian, at home this time.
▲ Trinity Christian-Cedar Hill @ Bishop Lynch Both teams have expectations to get back to their respective TAPPS state championship game AND win it. Since TC-Cedar Hill was able to accomplish that feat last year, give them the slightest of edges possible.
▲ Waco Midway @ Euless Trinity Trinity's defense dominated Midway last year to open the season on the road. Look for that defense puts the clamps down again on Midway on the way to another solid start to the season.
▲ Duncanville @ Lancaster This is a matchup that should happen yearly, but alas it does not. Duncanville is getting hit by injuries before the season starts, but should be able to walk away as the victors.
▲ Flower Mound Coram Deo @ Fort Worth Lake Country Christian Both teams could be vying for respective state titles when the dust settles on this season and expect to win their respective district. It'll be a good one, but we'll give the edge to Coram Deo.
▲ Fort Worth Christian @ Fort Worth Country Day In this cross-town, cross-private school action where both teams could wind up being state champions, give the edge to Fort Worth Country Day for have an already-established quarterback to open the year.
▲ Grapevine @ Azle Azle's at home and a 5A power right now. Grapevine is on the come-up. Azle has a bit more of a veteran team coming back in 2019 with 13 starters back compared to Grapevine's nine. Give us Azle.
▲ Highland Park @ Rockwall Defenses might as well take the night off because both of these teams like to get up and down the field and score - a lot - as evident by the 49-42 score these two put up last year to open the season. Conventional wisdom say the reigning state champs should be the pick, but being at home, give us Rockwall.
▲ Melissa @ Argyle Liberty Christian UIL vs. TAPPS in this matchup. Liberty Christian made a bit of a splash last year and have most of its core back again. Like its TAPPS brethren Prestonwood knocking off Wylie, give us Argyle Liberty Christian.
▲ Dallas Skyline @ Dallas South Oak Cliff Last, but certainly not least, is the Battle of Dallas. Skyline is a rising 6A power while SOC had an equally-impressive year last year. This one will be fun, but give us South Oak Cliff for a hard-fought win.
▲ Lucas Lovejoy vs. Colleyville Heritage Lovejoy is a team ready to break through and claim a district title while Heritage is trying to build on a playoff berth last year. We'll take Lovejoy in this one.
▲ Houston Yates @ Dallas Carter Dallas Carter should be able to get off to a good start against a Houston Yates team that is coming off an 0-10 season a year ago.
