The second week of high school football in the Natural State gave fans a glimpse of teams that will be contenders come November. Several teams that were not expected to perform well this season have taken steps forward and are proving to be contenders. We will focus on Little Rock Central and the Searcy Lions in this article.
Little Rock Central is one of the most storied programs in high school football in Arkansas. The Tigers have suffered some lean years over the past decade, but the potential is there to have a big season in 2019. The Tigers were impressive on Friday in gaining the win against a tough Rogers team. Little Rock Central has found an impressive quarterback in the form of Lawson Gunn. Gunn passed for almost 350 yards and four touchdowns against the Mounties. Next week the Tigers will open conference play against North Little Rock. The North Little Rock-Little Rock Central matchup will be a good measuring stick for the Tigers.
Meanwhile, the Searcy Lions has started the season off in impressive fashion. The Lions have started off the 2019 season with serious momentum. Lions quarterback Bryce Dixon passed for three touchdowns against Batesville and appears to have found his rhythm throwing the football. Searcy will be taking on Jacksonville next Friday and comes in with some serious momentum.
The early part of the season has shaped up nicely for the Lions and the Tigers. The schedules for each team gets more difficult and we will find out if these two teams can make some noise in November.
