Randy Masters goes by the nickname "Bobo."
"The nickname comes from my dad," the Shadow Creek sophomore athlete said. "Everyone called him 'Bobo.' He died when I was a kid, so everyone just started calling me 'Bobo' for him."
Masters had a breakout season for the 2019 state champs as a receiver and return-man.
"My dad is who I do it for," he said. "I talk to him before every game. Every time I'm doing something with sports, I talk with him."
Masters has recently exploded onto the recruiting landscape with his size and athletic ability. He has picked up offers from the likes of LSU, Florida, South Carolina and Houston among others.
"I grew up playing basketball and it wasn't until last year that I started taking football seriously," he said. "I think I have the opportunity to do great things. I see myself in the league years from now."
"It really hit me when the first offer came in from South Carolina last summer. Then I had a pretty good season," he said.
In the state championship game, Masters returned a punt for a clutch touchdown.
"I consider myself a smart player," he said. "When I saw everyone on the right side of the field, I had to pick it up. I knew no one was going to catch me. I had some of my teammates in front of me leading the way."
With tremendous confidence and ability, Masters is planning on a big junior year.
"There was so much more I could have done last year," he said. "This is a competitive school and I had some great seniors in front of me. I'm so happy we won state, but this year I'm going to be much better."
That means a big summer offseason is in store for Masters when the virus hopefully clears up.
"Everyone wants to get faster over the summer," he said. "I'll be working on my speed, my yards after catch, and staying in shape. The attention is making we work harder. I know if I take a day off, that someone else is going to be working."
"I'm from the hood where you are always trying to get out. That's why my favorite teams were USC and Florida. I'm pretty open as it relates to recruiting," he said. "I have a dawg mentality and I've grown up liking DeAndre Hopkins and Jalen Ramsey. They have the same mentality. I am hungry and nothing is going to stop me from getting to college and hopefully to the league."
Outside of football, Masters starts for the Shadow Creek varsity basketball team and raps.
"Basketball was really my first love," he laughed. "I also rap for fun. I don't talk too much, but when people really get to know me, they find out that I'm pretty goofy."
What's no joke is that Masters will have tons of recruiting options over the next two years.
"Randy is very athletic," Shadow Creek OC Tyrone Green said. "He has great hands, ball skills and body control. He's going to be big-time."
