THE POWER RANKINGS: Stony Point, Westwood, East View Boys Basketball grab eyeballs

“Football Weather” is a mythical phrase in Texas. Which is why I always joke that by the time it’s Football Weather in Texas, it’s Basketball Season.

Cue some late November cooler temperatures because action on the hardwood has just started heating up.

The 2024-25 Boys High School Basketball season got underway in the Austin area and across the state a couple of weeks ago. After a smattering of sleepy scrimmages and early non-district games, several teams competed in their first tournaments this past weekend, with several more “holiday classics” to come. Some teams stuck in large districts even began district play, which feels earlier than the latest round of 2028 presidential polls.

Speaking of polls, we’ll get them cranking for the Austin area on both the Boys and Girls sides once teams get a few more games under their belts. Polling is so subjective anyway that we’d like to get at least a little more data in the bank before we unleash the polling Furies.

That said, a few teams have caught our eyes. Stony Point (6-2) lost Josiah Moseley to graduation but returns just about everyone else from last year’s State runner-up team that finished 38-2. Westwood (11-0) remains the area’s only 6A undefeated squad and figures to duke it out with fellow Round Rock ISD schools Stony Point and Round Rock (8-2) and others for top honors in a loaded District 25-6A. Other teams to watch include Westlake, Lake Travis and Dripping Springs from District 26-6A.

East View and Leander have raced out to quick starts in 5A but don’t be surprised to see Liberty Hill, Leander and Cedar Park high in our rankings before seasons’ end.

Grab a jacket on the way to the gym; it’s finally football weather in Texas.
