We blinked and Week 9 of Texas High School Football is already here. This season has been full of upsets, snapped streaks, newcomers, and strong plays in the DFW area and it's not over yet! VYPE DFW has the top games that you're going to want to keep your eyes on this weekend! Let's jump right in:
Denton Guyer vs. McKinney Boyd Neena Sidhu (VYPEU - VYPE Media)
Denton Guyer vs. McKinney Boyd - Friday, October 22 at 7 p.m.
Denton Guyer Wildcats (7-1, 3-1) All eyes are on Denton Guyer after a big loss to Allen last week. Despite a close matchup, the Wildcats fell to the Eagles with a 38-31 score. The team will be looking to bounce back and show that they are ready to prove that they have what it takes to continue through the season despite controversy and adversity that riddled the team last week. Jackson Arnold has been playing tough in all areas for the Wildcats, but the defense is going to have to step up against a strong McKinney Boyd team.
McKinney Boyd Broncos (6-1, 2-1) The Broncos are coming into the game with their heads held high, ready to make their dominance on the field known. Their only loss so far this season- much like Guyer's- came against Allen where the Broncos fell 37-24. Despite the loss, McKinney Boyd has been proving to have one of the toughest teams in the Dallas-Fort Worth area this season. Led by junior quarterback Ryan Shackleton, Boyd has been paving the way towards playoffs.
What To Expect: Denton Guyer is going to come into the game angry. They have been the talk of the metroplex for a week and they are ready to shut it down and show that they're here to play and that's it. We are going to see the team put up a battle against McKinney Boyd. McKinney Boyd wants to continue making strides down the field and strutting through the endzone with the power that they have shown all season. It's going to be a great match-up and definitely one of the biggest in the metroplex on Friday night.
▲ Prosper vs. Denton Braswell Neena Sidhu (VYPEU - VYPE Media)
Prosper vs. Denton Braswell - Friday, October 22 at 7 p.m.
Prosper Eagles (4-3, 1-2) The Eagles have had a roller-coaster season. Coming into Friday's game, Prosper has a 1-2 district record where they have posted two district losses against Southlake Carroll (31-0) and an overtime loss to Little Elm (59-56). Despite having those losses, quarterback Harrison Rosar has been playing great in the pocket for the Eagles. Rosar has tallied 15 touchdown passes with 1,380 passing yards. On the run, Rosar has scored four rushing touchdowns. Malik Dailey will be another key player to watch on Prosper's end of the ball. Dailey has rushed for 467 yards and three touchdowns.
Denton Braswell Bengals (5-3, 2-2) The Bengals are also entering Friday's game with two district losses. Braswell fell in an overtime loss against McKinney Boyd (37-34) to open district play and then posted a 35-14 loss two weeks ago against a strong Denton Guyer team. The team is coming in after a big win over McKinney High and has been led by some great athletes. Quarterback Keegan Byrd has thrown 14 touchdowns with 1,540 passing yards. Byrd has also rushed for seven touchdowns on 216 rushing yards. Jaylon Burton will be another key player to watch for the Bengals on Friday night.
What To Expect: A win on Friday means a playoff spot for the winner. Both teams want the chance at post-season play and are going to put up whatever fight they need to put up to get there. It will be an extremely competitive matchup. If Prosper's defense can figure out a way to force the Bengals to utilize Byrd less, then the Eagles stand a chance at clenching the win.
▲ Euless Trinity vs. Weatherford Euless Trinity vs. Weatherford - Friday, October 22 at 7 p.m.
Euless Trinity Trojans (6-1, 4-0) The Trojans have been on fire this season. Their only loss came in the preseason against a strong Austin Westlake team. Their strength has come from senior quarterback Ollie Gordon who has been strong on his feet for the Trojans. Gordan has tallied 1,259 rushing yards with 19 rushing touchdowns. Through the air, Gordon has thrown three touchdowns on 293 yards. With Gordan being at his peak performance, the Trojans are sure to put up a battle against Weatherford.
Weatherford Kangaroos (5-2, 4-0) The Kangaroos have been putting up quite the fight this season as well. Currently undefeated in district play, the Roos have posted big wins against the likes of Fort Worth Boswell, Fort Worth Paschal, Haltom City, L.D. Bell and more. The team is led by junior quarterback Ryan Clark who has thrown seven touchdowns on 821 passing yards this season while also rushing for 18 touchdowns with 731 rushing yards. Brayden Bork has also been strong on his feet for the Roos with 572 rushing yards for four touchdowns.
What To Expect: This game could be a battle. Not only are both teams good this season, but a win means a playoff berth. It's going to be an offensive heavy game, but the Roos just might have the upper hand with Clark willing to put the ball through the air a little more often than Gordon does. The catalyst to this game will be which defense steps up to put a stop to the other team's run game.
▲ Lovejoy vs. Frisco Lovejoy vs. Frisco - Friday, October 22 at 7 p.m.
Lovejoy Leopards (7-0, 5-0) Quarterback Alexander Franklin has been on a new level for the Leopards this season. Franklin has thrown 33 touchdowns with 1,907 passing yards while completing 67% of his passes. The team has been undefeated on the season and continues to dominate the field through the air. Strong on his feet for the Leopards is Matthew Mainord who has scored seven touchdowns on 72 carries for 507 yards. Not only has Lovejoy's offense been spectacular, but the defense has held their opponents to a combined 70 points all season.
Frisco Raccoons (7-0, 5-0) Frisco has proven to be dominant on the season. Quarterback Wyatt Carson has thrown seven touchdowns on 494 yards while also scoring one rushing touchdown, but passing has not been the secret to the Raccoons' success. The secret lies with a handful of rushers who have led the team to victory. Dylan Hardin has rushed for 11 touchdowns on 31 carries for 294 yards, Jordon Hamilton has scored eight touchdowns on 35 carries for 499 yards, Brandon Miyazono has scored seven touchdowns on 29 carries for 434 yards, and Bradford Martin has scored six touchdowns on 88 carries for 836 yards. The run game is strong for the Raccoons and the defense has stepped up in big games.
What To Expect: Offense heavy play. Both teams are going to want to score early and often in order to get the win. With strong runners on both teams, it's going to be up to the defense to put up the fight of the night in order to pull off a strong win in this battle of the unbeatens.
▲ Tyler vs. Highland Park Shana Willeford (VYPE Media)
Tyler vs. Highland Park - Friday, October 22 at 7:30 p.m.
Tyler Lions (5-2, 3-0) The Lions are coming off of a big 48-10 win over Wylie East. Led by senior quarterback Eli Holt, Tyler has posted an undefeated district record so far this season. Holt has thrown 20 touchdowns for 1,917 passing yards while also scoring four rushing touchdowns. Montrell Wade has accounted for 12 of the touchdown receptions helping the Lions show their strength through the air this season. The Lions are going to have to mix it up, though, in order to keep Highland Parks' defense on their toes.
Highland Park Scots (6-1, 3-0) The Scots have posted a strong season. Despite losing their season-opener to Southlake Carroll, Highland Park has been able to bounce back with the regular intensity that fans are used to seeing. The Scots are coming off of a big win over McKinney North and are led by a strong quarterback- Brennan Storer. Storer has thrown for 18 touchdowns this season while rushing for two. Another key player in the Scots' success this season is Christian Reeves who leads the team in rushing. Reeves has seven touchdowns on 79 carries. Not only is the offense good, but the Scots' defense is quick about figuring out their opponent's play style.
What To Expect: The Scots have the potential of running away with the game over Tyler if the Lions aren't careful. To stay up to par with Highland Park, Tyler is going to have to use a mix of scorers on the night. The Lions' offense will have to be sure to run the ball just as much as they put it through the air against a smart Scots defense.
