Beaumont West Brook senior quarterback Troy Yowman came into the 2019 season a bit of a question mark for head coach Eric Peevey. Having started four games as a junior, Yowman was gaining traction towards the end of the season when he and friends were involved in an automobile accident during the second round of playoffs.
Fighting through injuries, Yowman would play only sparingly during the Bruins six-week playoff run to the 6A Division 2 title game.
Built like a freight train, Yowman, six foot one inch and 230 pounds, has progressed his senior year into one of the top throwing quarterbacks in the region with 2,418 passing yards and 23 touchdown passes through nine games.
"Yowman has really progressed with his reads and how he moves in the pocket," said Peevey, into his third season at West Brook.
"We've always put a lot on Troy with the offense and different schemes. Each week we change schemes and each week he adjusts with it. His ability to find the open receiver with teams blitzing all the time, he's only been sacked four times the entire year."
Along with his pocket presence and cannon of an arm, Yowman also punts for the Bruins, he was all-district as a junior, and has even offered to long snap on field goals.
"Troy is exceptionally athletic," said Peevey.
"He's strong, he squats 485 pounds, he's a very strong power cleaner, his lower body is exceptionally strong, that why a lot of people fall off of him in the pocket. He very seldom goes down with a one arm tackle."
Yowman most likely will be projected as a mid-level college prospect but winning and leadership are valued commodities at the Division 1 level. Competing in District 21-6A with the likes of nationally ranked Galena Park North Shore brings in college coaches and scouts.
"He's going to have the opportunity to go to a lot of places and they're going to want him to throw the ball and that's a positive," said Peevey.
West Brook ends their regular season with a game against Sterling and will be a 6A division two representative in the playoffs.
This Yowman's work will conclude late this fall.
